close formula

Hello, 2018! We are HERE for the “new year, new me” mantra when it comes to predicting what trends will blow up in the next 365 days, and the ones we’ll be leaving behind in yesteryear. That’s why we caught up with some of the most influential hairdressers in the game, so we can help you be ready for anything behind the chair. Here are the trends your fave stylists predict will go viral, so scroll through and get inspired.

1. Choppy Shag Haircuts
The iconic shag haircut made a major comeback last year, and 2018 is about embracing those ‘70s-inspired, choppy layers for a versatile and super-textured style. We chatted with Adir Abergel (@hairbyadir), the go-to stylist for Hollywood’s biggest stars—Kristen Stewart, Gwyneth Paltrow and Rooney Mara to name a few—and he’s expecting the modern shag to feature choppy layers, major movement and texture for days.

2. Wash-And-Go Hair
We know your clients love lived-in texture, and LA cutter Tim Morrison (@timm.morrison) predicts “wash-and-go” hair will be 2018’s way of embracing everyday style. “One thing I’ve starting doing is what I call ‘selective cutting’ or point-cutting deep on the baseline and anticipating where your client wants texture based on how they curl their hair,” shares Tim. This creates a wearable, everyday texture she can style at home.

3. Goodbye, Rooty Blondes!
Celeb blonder Justin Anderson (@justinandersoncolor) is our go-to for all things blonde—Jennifer Aniston, Miley Cyrus and Kristin Cavallari are some of his regulars. So, what’s in the stars for 2018? “Celebrities here in LA are asking for their roots to be taken care of in time for award season, and I think we’re going to see the end of the grown-out, rooty haircolor trend,” shares Justin. “As a salon colorist, I am excited to see this trend finally take a turn and get our clients back into the salon for regular touch ups.”

4. Razor Cuts
2017 was the year of the bob, and according to haircutting icon Sally Hershberger (@sallyhershberger), 2018 will be the year of the razor cut. “We are moving away from the bob and women are open to more androgynous and edgy haircuts, but still soft,” shares Sally. So, start mastering soft ends and major texture for an on-trend cut your clients will love.

5. Muted Shades
Keep your eye out for soft and subtle haircolor. “Everyone is toning down and making their color more muted and darker,” shares Sally. “Even with pastels, they are going softer.” And for metallics? Redken Artist Sean Godard predicts they will definitely stay on-trend, but they’ll become softer and more opalescent with less saturated colors.

6. Go Green
Pantone’s color of the year may be ultra violet, but Sean predicts that green haircolor is about to go viral. Style icons like Rihanna, Kesha and Jared Leto have pulled off the bold and rebellious color trend in years past, and get ready to see everything from lime to teal take over our Insta feeds in 2018.

7. Disconnected Haircuts
Mullets have slowly been making their way back into the mainstream, so keep disconnected haircuts (from subtle to extreme!) on your radar. “A client with long hair might request adding fringe or a shorter side, but not necessarily shaved,” shares Philip Wolff (@philipwolffhair). “Someone with a shorter style might request adding an accent extension piece.” Hey, it’s a new year…so help your edgier clients make a big change by suggesting bold, trendsetting styles.
