2 Tips For Pre-Toning Blondes & Creative Color
Do This To Remove Warmth From Blonde Hair
When working with vibrant shades, especially green, purple and blue, it’s important that all hints of warmth are removed for an even application. Keep scrolling to learn how she cut her pre-toning down to five minutes and how she uses No.4P when blonding.

Pre-Toning Before A Color Application
Kait does a lot of creative color in the salon and the key to a gorgeous result is a neutral canvas. It used to take her 20 minutes to tone a client before applying creative color. Now, it only takes five minutes! That’s because she uses Olaplex No.4P Blonde Enhancer™ Toning Shampoo, which is designed to remove unwanted yellow tones from blonde, pre-lightened and gray hair, plus repair damaged hair bonds with Olaplex’s multi-patented technology.
Here’s how Kait pre-tones the hair:
- First, wet the hair at the shampoo bowl. Apply a generous amount of Olaplex No.4P to the roots and saturate through.
- Continue running your hands through the hair and let process for two to five minutes, before applying the shampoo through the rest of the hair.
- Let the midlengths and ends process for two minutes and rinse.
Pro Tip: Olaplex No.4P works fast, so Kait advises checking the hair by doing a pinch test. Simply remove product from the hair with your fingers so you can see how toned the hair looks underneath.

Pre-Toning Before A Blond Toner
The secret to color longevity for blondes (especially platinums)? Pre-toning! To strengthen hair after bleach and neutralize unwanted yellow tones, Kait uses Olaplex No.4P to shampoo and pre-tone blondes as a prep step for a toner application.
Note: Olaplex No.4P is a fantastic retail item for clients to prevent brassiness at home. Tell these clients to let the shampoo sit for 1 to 3 minutes before washing out for the optimal result.
