Single Dad Goes To “Beauty School” For His Daughter!

If they gave out awards for dedicated parents, Greg Wickherst of Colorado would definitely be in the running! Greg has had 15 years of baldheadedness—partly due to his service in the Navy, partly due to the convenience of being a man. So when it came to hairstyling, his knowledge was lacking.

That was until last fall. After him and his wife split, Greg gained majority custody of their 3-year-old daughter, Izzy. Naturally, getting her ready for daycare in the morning was a challenge. That’s why Greg, who works at a college, wandered from his department to the cosmetology department seeking advice. The head of that department set him up with one of the department’s best students and Greg began learning how to do hair!

“She said, ‘Okay, this is how you do a ponytail and then from that, you can braid the ponytail and do a simple braid, or you can wrap it around and do a simple bun. Here’s how to do a French braid, here’s how to do a fishtail braid.’ She just showed me all these different styles and so I went home and just started practicing,” says Greg. “I got pretty good at it.”

“Good at it” is an understatement! Greg has been documenting Izzy’s changing hairstyles on his Facebook page, starting with the simple ’dos, and eventually much more elaborate styles. Izzy is one fashion-forward toddler, all thanks to her dad!

Although his photos are generating a lot of social media publicity, Greg doesn’t really understand why.

“It’s silly that a dad is getting attention for showing interest in his daughter’s hair!” says Greg. “All I want is for Izzy to know that her daddy loves her, and will do anything to make sure she has the best childhood that I could provide.”
