Textured Pomp + Low Fade

For the men in your chair who are a big fan of the classics, you can’t go wrong with this textured pomp and low fade combo from Esquire Grooming Barber Trevelle Baker (@vellcuts). Get his inspiration behind this modern cut below, then read on for the how-to steps!

“The haircut is a play on the classic conk and pompadour look from the ’50s and ’60s and the ’80s classic hi-top fade,” shares Trevelle. “For a true modern look, I lowered the fade by extending the weight of the blend and reset the direction of the hi-top by keeping it lower in the crown and elevating the length toward the front.”

HOW-TO STEPS

Detangle the hair using the Esquire Grooming Standard Cutting Comb, then find the weight line which is located on the peak or halo of the head. This will determine what hair needs to be removed.

Staying parallel to the parietal ridge, use the Esquire Grooming Classic Professional Clipper with the #2 guard to clipper cut the sides and nape.

Switch to the #1 guard with the blade lever at 50 percent. Then, invert the clipper and cut the hair following the natural curve of the head. Once you reach the occipital bone, begin reverse blending from the longest length to the shortest length to avoid harsh lines.

Switch to the 0 guard with the lever at zero, cutting the sideburns and outline of the hair. While cutting, gradually move the lever to 30 percent and then 50 percent to create a smooth and seamless transition.

Pro Tip: Setting the blade lever to 50 percent is cutting the hair short while zero percent is cutting the hair long.

Holding the Esquire Grooming Classic Professional Clipper vertical, use the clipper-over-comb technique and cut in a C-shaped scooping motion to connect the sides.

Determine where the apex is and cut the top layers even and square, starting at the crown and working toward the fringe.

Pro Tip: When blending, remember to comb the hair while you cut to remove weight lines.

Hold the clipper at a 45 degree angle and connect the sides to the top, keeping the fringe natural. Cross-check the square shape by combing through the hair to find any weight lines.

Apply a quarter-sized amount of Esquire Grooming Defining Paste in the palm of your hand and thoroughly massage the paste into the hair to mold and define the style. Then, use your fingers to gently twist the natural curls into the desired pattern.
