First off, Paul made it clear to his client—and himself—that this was going to be a time-consuming, costly process. “As with anything, a great color, great cut and great design take a plan, time and patience. Plan your work, then work your plan,” he shares. “Remember, with these techniques, there are NO SHORTCUTS!”

Pricing
“When consulting with guests on major color changes, I charge an hourly rate,” Paul shares. “When I consulted with my guest Terri on this, she was well aware of the price and what it included, such as Olaplex treatments and take-home maintenance like toning shampoo, conditioner and Olaplex No.3.” Paul charged Terri $600 for this transformation, which took six hours. “My haircuts are $110 and I usually charge $100 to $125 an hour with a four- to six-hour time frame for major color changes,” he adds.

  • Formula B:

PRAVANA Pure Light Powder Lightener + 20-volume developer + Olaplex No.1

HOW-TO STEPS

  • 1

Use Formula A in a global, off-scalp application. Process, checking frequently.

  • 2

After 45 minutes, rinse and apply Olaplex No.2 for 10 minutes. Shampoo, condition and dry the hair.

  • 3

Apply Formula B to areas needing more lift. “Sometimes it’s easier to use foils in these areas for more control, which is what I chose to do,” Paul says. Process to a pale yellow.

  • 4

Rinse and apply Olaplex No.2 for another 10 minutes. Lightly shampoo and condition.

  • 5

On dry hair, apply Formula C to new growth, process for 15 minutes, then apply to the ends for an additional 15 to 20 minutes. “Always check throughout processing to ensure consistency,” Paul says.

  • 6

Rinse and apply Olaplex No.2 for another 10 minutes. Shampoo, condition and style.

  • Update
Paul likes to see his color transformation guests two to three weeks after their appointment to see if anything needs tweaking. “In this case, we needed to gloss/tone once more to maintain the overall color,” he shares. Terri loves the look—it’s been about a year, and she’s still rocking the ice shade! Check out more of Paul’s transformations below.
