MIZANI® True Textures™ Nu-Hawk How-To
This model is a Curl Type VI (Coiled) on the MIZANI® Natural Curl Key™. Her hair coils close to the scalp, creating a loose, curly Afro. She wants more flexibility and manageability, and less frizz.
Here, the model has been pre-texturized from a Curl Type VI to a Type V, using the MIZANI® Butter Blend™ Texturizing Technique.
Blow out the hair until it is completely dry but not bone straight. Then, take a 1-inch-wide, diagonal part, which starts at the front temple area and moves back to the center nape. Establish the length in the back, then move forward, as you cut the section to the traveling guide. Cut at a 45-degree angle, then clean up the line with freehand cutting. This section establishes the shorter length of the side sections.
Move up the head and bring down the next diagonal parting. Elevate the section with the established guide and cut it with the guide. Here, about 2 inches of length are removed. Bring down a third parting and repeat the procedure.

Now move to the opposite side and repeat, cutting 3 panels to the guide. The left and right sides cross in back to form a V-shape.
Next, move to the top and part off a 2-inch wide panel that will act as the longer “hawk” in the Mohawk-inspired cut.
The panel should fall to a V-shape in back. Clip the pieces that fall away between the top panel and the previously cut sides. They will be blended later.
Beginning in the back of the panel for the “hawk,” part off a horizontal section, and hold it out at a 90-degree angle. Cut it to the previous length guide.

Now, work forward, projecting the hair at 90-degrees. Overdirect sections back to the traveling guide to create a length increase. Complete the top panel in this manner.
Then return to the center of the crown, and pivot around the head to blend the sections that were dropped out. Hold the hair up at 45-degree angle with the guide, and cut from short-to-long, connecting the “hawk” to the shorter sides.
Complete the cut in front, projecting the sections and cutting to blend the longest pieces in front. To finish the style, work through TRUE TEXTURES™ Perfect Curl, and use the Freehand Finishing technique. For extra definition on longer hair, pin the sides up with hairpins to showcase the hawk, and dry under an open dryer. Then remove the hairpins.
When the texture is reduced to a Curl Type V, the Nu-Hawk cut allows for a fresh, fun style.
MIZANI® True Textures™ Nu-Hawk How-To
Younger clients will love this funky, Mohawk-inspired style. The hair is cut along diagonal lines at the sides, before a top panel is cut into a “hawk” shape. The sections between the sides and the “hawk” are blended, and then the hair is styled with the MIZANI® Freehand Finishing Technique. This style can be exposed to water. If it is, just re-apply a dime- to quarter-sized amount of TRUE TEXTURES™ Perfect Curl to refresh and hold curls. (The model’s hair was pre-texturized with Butter Blend™ to control volume and frizz.) When the texture is reduced to a Curl Type V, the Nu-Hawk cut allows for a fresh, fun style.
