Begin by stripping out the red from her color. “I don’t ever recommend stripping the hair more than twice in one session. If you notice that the texture of the hair is starting to get compromised then you need to stop at that point,” notes George.

Once the red is stripped, apply Formula B close to the base to add back in a dark golden blonde. Then, highlight and tone over that using Formula A. “Over the next few weeks and months we’ll be refining and perfecting the color. It’s a very time consuming process that needs to be babied,” says George.

“We went with a little more depth at ther roots and soft, delicate highlights throughout so the grow out would be eaiser,” says George.

 

“In addition to damage, whenever you’re doing a major color change you could have a lot of problems to deal with—from fading to dryness of the hair. How-To: From Rich Red to Blonde Babe

Major color transformations can take a toll on your client’s hair, which is why maintaining its integrity is one of your main priorities during the harsh process. Even though it took celebrity stylist George Papanikolas (who works with celebs like Khloe Kardashian and Hailey Baldwin), eight hours to take model Lydia Hearst from a rich red back to her natural blonde, he managed to protect her locks from major breakage. “It’s up to the colorist to make a judgment call about how light the hair can go when doing transformations such as this,” notes George. Find out how you can take your client back to blonde while keeping her hair healthy! 

 




Natural/Starting Level: “She is a natural blonde so we’re going back to where her base is. The good thing is, she let her roots grow out for the last two months so we had about 2 inches of her natural to work with,” says George.
