The Guy Tang Way to Cover Gray

Color becomes crucial for clients as they age. The tell-tale sign? Those pesky gray strands. And as these clients are your most loyal—often visiting your chair every five to six weeks—it’s important to treat them right. To try out the new Schwarzkopf Professional IGORA ROYAL ABSOLUTES, Guy Tang tested it on a very special client—his mother! Not only did Guy “Tang” her hair, he also gave her a modern cut to bring out the color. “You have to build the house before you paint it,” says Guy. “You need to create the foundation before you color.” And when it comes to coloring those mature ladies, Guy prefers a warm golden tone as opposed to something opaque.

    Guy’s Modern Lob:
Start by overdirecting the hair back, then take your shears and cut a little lower than you want the ends to hit. “You can always cut more, but you can’t put it back,” notes Guy.

Then go back and refine the cut by creating texture on the ends so it doesn’t look choppy.

    Application:
Apply Formula A to the regrowth only. This color creates a nice light, golden brown shade. Don’t pull the color through or it will run darker.

Continue applying color to the roots in each quadrant. Apply color to the front first so it has more time to process.

While the root color is processing, backcomb the hair a little to create that classic ombre feel.

Place a long foil down and apply Formula B to random strands of hair to create a soft, ombre effect. This color will lift and tone the hair without the need to lighten or bleach the hair. Lay foil over the color and move on to the next strand.
