Actress and style icon Lupita Nyong’o literally looked like an Oscars award at the 90th annual Academy Awards. I mean that gold Versace dress is seriously EVERYTHING—but the real statement-maker was her traditional Rwandan hairstyle embellished with metallic thread.

“Lupita’s look was inspired by images of Amasunzu hairstyles, which are traditional to Rwandan culture,” shares Lupita’s stylist Vernon François (@vernonfrancois). We wanted something clean and sculpted to accent her dress and show off the neckline.” Watch the videos below for major inspo, then snag the steps to recreate this look!

Prep the hair by washing with PURE~FRO® Shampoo and Conditioner.

Apply PURE~FRO® Mist~Nourishing Water & Scalp Nourish~Ment Braids and Locs Spray to soothe and protect strands. Then, blow-dry with a round brush.

Next, smooth out the ends using a flat iron and leave the roots untouched.

Using your hands, mold the hair into a clean and contoured structure. Set by applying hairspray all over.

Then, weave a gold thread throughout the style using a classic stitch technique to add a touch of glamour and shine.
