Lizzo made history last night when she was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Competition Program: the only program to do so in its first season. For a category that frequently sees repeat winners, it was refreshing to see Lizzo leave the show, Emmy-in-hand. Standing next to her? The one and only Shelby Swain (@theshelbyswain) who was responsible for Lizzo’s effortless updo. Shelby gave us the full rundown on how she achieved her sleek, piecey bun and we’re here to give you all the tips you need to recreate this look.

HOW-TO STEPS

Shelby started this look by shampooing Lizzo’s hair with the SexyHair Boost Up Volumizing Shampoo, followed by the SexyHair Boost Up Volumizing Conditioner. Shelby says this is the perfect combo to create “volume and moisture” in the hair.

Once washed, Shelby applied the SexyHair Tri-Wheat Leave-in Conditioner to help prepare Lizzo’s hair for straightening while providing heat protection to prevent damage from styling.

Shelby blow-dried Lizzo’s hair, directing it upward towards the spot where she planned the final top knot to be.

Once the hair was dry, Shelby straightened it while continuing to direct it upwards.

Then, Shelby secured the top knot with a coated elastic ponytail holder and applied SexyHair Big Weatherproof Spray for protection against humidity and frizz.

Shelby finished the look by applying SexyHair Spray & Play Hairspray to secure loose strands of hair and ensure the style would hold.
