What is watercolor toning?

Inspired by the painting technique, watercolor toning enhances the client’s natural base color and creates a natural reflection similar to the tones in a watercolor painting. To achieve this, Cassie melts Alfaparf Milano Color Wear Cream and Color Wear Gloss toners together, resulting in a sun-kissed brunette tone.

Who is the ideal client for this technique?

“Clients are looking to incorporate more of their natural color into their highlight and balayage services,” Cassie explains. “Watercolor is the perfect solution for those natural color appointments.”

FORMULA STEPS

1. Always start any appointment with a thorough consultation. Cassie shared her go-to questions for a successful appointment:

  • “Are you OK with the darkest shade being your natural color?”
  • “Do you know your skin undertone? If not, let’s do a wrist test!”
  • “How do you wear your hair?” Make sure to know where they part for an accurate face frame placement!

Before

2. After lightening, cleanse the hair using Semi Di Lino Brunette Shampoo to soften the raw lift. Then, detangle and section the hair for the base application.

3. Apply Formula A to the base. After five minutes, gently comb the product down to blend any harsh lines.

4. Color melt Formula B into Formula A, blending down to create a soft tonal progression.

5. Apply Formula C all over for a cohesive finished result. Process for 10 to 15 minutes.

6. Rinse and style as desired using the Semi Di Lino Cristalli line.

Finished look.
