We are LIVING for this cool-toned color transformation we spotted at the Schwarzkopf Professional tbh Permanent Hair Color launch event in Chicago by Amy McManus, aka @camouflageandbalayage to her 222k Instagram followers! When Amy’s model came in with banding and brassy yellow color, she combined a root melt application with full saturation on the ends for a smoky balayage and shadow root effect. The result? This rooty blonde blend! Get Amy’s color formulas and application breakdown below.

COLOR FORMULAS

  • Formula A (root melt)

Schwarzkopf Professional tbh Permanent Color 7-16 + 6-volume IGORA VIBRANCE® Activator Gel

  • Formula B (mids)

    equal parts tbh Permanent Color 7-16 + 9-16 + 6-volume IGORA VIBRANCE® Activator Gel

  • Formula C (balayage ends)

Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME IGORA® VARIO BLOND SUPER PLUS Powder Lightener + 10-volume developer (1:2)

  • Formula D (toner on ends)

    tbh Permanent Color 10-19 + 10-51 + tbh Tone Softener + 6-volume IGORA VIBRANCE® Activator Gel

FORMULA STEPS

1. Start by applying Formula A to the root area. Then, melt into the mids with Formula B—because her client had previous banding and harsh regrowth, Amy started the application with a melt to break up the band.

2. Apply Formula C to the ends and blend up, fully saturating each section to kick out the yellow.

Pro Tip: Because Amy’s client was already pretty light, she lightened the ends at the same time as the melt to add a pop of brightness.

3. Process everything, rinse and wash.

4. Apply Formula D to tone the ends. Process, then rinse.

5. Finished Look
