When her client, Vicky, came in with months-old, faded ombré and asked for an update, Allie Villa of Mimi’s Salon in Belmar, NJ knew exactly what to do. So she got to work refreshing Vicky’s ombré—adding hints of gold, ashy blonde and pearl violet to brighten the look.

And best of all? Allie captured photos of her beautiful, hand-painted masterpiece and shared them with us! Below is her formula and application steps. Happy painting!

Booked for: 3 hours. Alexandra says: “I always ask my clients on the phone how much hair they have, the texture, if they have any previous color and what they want the end result to be. From there, I will add more time or not, but always 3 hours to start.”

Charged: $150 for hair painting and glaze, $60 for cut. Total = $210

COLOR FORMULAS

  • Formula A:

Artego Balayage Bleach + 40-volume developer

  • Formula B:

equal parts Wella Color Touch 9/73 and 9/16 + a few grams of Wella Color Touch Relights /86

FORMULA STEPS

1. Working from the nape up, paint Formula A in “V” sections while blending toward the middle of each V by feathering the brush up and down.

2. Continue painting Formula A on the side sections in diagonal slices, following the part and painting higher toward the face and lower toward the back of the head.

3. Cover the entire head in balayage wrap and process for 20 to 30 minutes or until the ends are a level 9 or 10.

4. Shampoo and towel-dry, then apply Formula B. Process for 15 minutes under heat.

5. Rinse, condition and blow-dry. For smooth, glamorous waves, wrap hair around a 1-inch curling iron facing down and away from the face. After curling, spray with a working hairspray and brush through.
