The trick to creating seamless color when using pastels? For Kesli Johnson (@kesliann), it’s understanding the hair’s pigment and how it will take to your formulas.

For this perfect Redken pastel, she used two formulas for the gloss because she knew from the freshly-lightened root and down two inches the color would grab easily, but the midlengths and ends would not be as vibrant. So she diluted the first gloss with clear, allowing the color to be the same from roots to ends. Get the details, formulas and steps below!

COLOR FORMULAS

  • Formula A:

    Ammonia-Free Lightener + 30-volume developer + 1/16 oz. Olaplex No.1

  • Formula B:

Equal Parts Redken Shades EQ Pastel Pink + Clear + Shades EQ Processing Solution

FORMULA STEPS

1. Apply Formula A globally until the new growth, midlengths and ends are all lifted to a pale, no-yellow blonde. (Think the inside of a banana peel!)

2. Rinse at the bowl and apply Olaplex No.2 for five minutes.

3. Gently towel-dry the hair. Then, starting in the back, apply Formula B to the root area and midlengths and Formula C from the mids to the ends. Let process for 20 minutes at room temperature.

4. Rinse the color, shampoo, blow-dry and style as desired.
