What you need to know:

1. Who is the ideal client candidate for this?

These fun ’90s-inspired color placements are the perfect way for someone that wants to dip their toe into the world of unconventional color. “It’s perfect for millennials wanting to reminisce or for anyone looking to stay on top of the latest hair trends,” adds Brit. Clients with a strong hairline are the best candidates for this look, but bangs can still have this look, it just requires strategic placement.

2. What at-home and in-salon maintenance is required for this look?

It is important to remind clients that while their hair may not necessarily feel or look dry, it is necessary to adjust their care regimen after a lightening service. “I recommend a hydrating shampoo and conditioner, which will restore moisture back into the hair,” suggests Brit. Your client should know that the key to maintaining your color at the salon is a glossing treatment in between color services to maintain tone. This should be done every four to six weeks, which would ideally be halfway between color appointments.

3. Does this look come with any specific challenges or is there anyone you would not recommend for this look?

“Well first off, it’s important to go to someone who knows what they are doing when getting your hair colored in this way. Chunky highlights are done differently these days, and are designed to look less severe and harsh, giving it a more modern feel,” explains Brit. Correct placement and execution are key for this look and require professional expertise and time.
