Vienna in 1903 was a hotbed of creative innovation.  The works of Secessionist painters like Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele and Weiner Werkstaette designers Josef Hoffman and Kolomon Moser were leading a style revolution at the time.  The sinuous lines of Art Nouveau were combined with the geometry of Modernism to create a new aesthetic – organic modernism.

Klimt painted the primal force of sexual attraction on canvases lavishly embellished with gold leaf, featuring seductive wraiths with porcelain skin and berry stained lips.  Modern day style innovators at Sassoon Academy took this period of organic modernism and turned it into inspiration for their Spring/Summer 2008 Collection-“Geoganic.”

Sassoon’s new collection sees a renaissance of organic modernism in contemporary design.  Nature meets geometric modernity in a series of shapes that are diametrically cut with L shaped layering and reversed graduation techniques to create paradoxically oppositional effects.  Sassoon International Creative Director Mark Hayes says, “We’re finding new methods to create shapes that are geometric when flat and when ruffled have volume in unexpected ways.”

Color is geo-ganic; the abstract squares, sinuous lines and L shapes Klimt and Schiele used as decorative devices in their work are transcribed into subtly tones sections of related colors such as cyclamen, violet and mulberry.  They’re accented with a vibrant flash of belladonna.  Gold and coral with a flash of emerald green recall the colors of a silk komono falling from a model’s body caught on canvas by Egon Schiele.
