Three San Diego beauty academies – Je Boutique, Bay Vista and Poway Academy – have launched the student Master Artistic Team (M.A.T.) in a step to fulfill the industry’s need for schools to go beyond just preparing students to pass their board exam.  The M.A.T. was assembled to explore the more artistic side of hairdressing, with artistic director and platform artist Diego Raviglione as the leader/mentor.

The team consists of five driven and talented students from all three schools, and here they showcase their first semi-annual trend collection.  Says Diego Raviglione, “Cosmetology schools should really nurture the passion of hairdressing by being mentors and helping develop their creative side by showing students all the ways they can use the knowledge they’ve been given.”

Master Artistic Team Overview
To be considered for the team, students designed a unique cut with color during a timed trial, and were selected based on discipline (standing position, scissor grip, application of learned skills) and the ability to explain their intent and how inspiration was manifested into design.

Collection Overview
Created by M.A.T. members Bird Lindsay, Felicia Taite, Rachel Potter, Victoria Nguyen and Yolanda McGirt with guidance and direction from Raviglione, the collection was inspired by a combination of retro classic shapes with an aggressive attitude, paying homage to the timeless cuts that have inspired hair design over the last 90 years.
The color application was inspired by the modernist era – a time of abandonment of artistic restraint – an era that lends itself to creative inspiration as it encourages looking beyond the obvious and seeking the innovative approach.
