Rorschach from Geneva Cowen and George Garcia

While visiting family in Munich, photographer Shalem Mathews came across a paper shop, where a peculiar inkblot grabbed his attention. “I’ve always been intrigued by Rorschach’s, the way they’re subjective and each viewer has a unique experience from their viewing—they bring our emotions and experiences from the subconscious to the surface,” explains Mathews.

Mathews loves the duality of a Rorschach, the organic way it imitates the natural symmetry seen so prevalently in the world—two opposing forces simultaneously at conflict and in harmony. Geneva Cowen, Redken Education Artist did the styling while George Garcia, Redken Education Artist, provided the color—all using Redken products, to evoke this concept.

True to the nature of a Rorschach, high contrast black and white with natural film grain and fabric movement was used to mimic natural form and randomization.
