Offspring Gets Muy Caliente in Miami
This year’s Offspring Miami Jam, created by exclusive Aveda distributors Neill Corporation and The Salon People, was out of this world. Hair guru Tim Hartley donned it “the most exciting hair show in North America this year.” And how couldn’t it be, with hair masters like Hartley, Vivienne Mackinder, Van Council, Antoinette Beenders, Ray Civello, Ruth Roche, David Wagner and Ginger Boyle gracing the stage, showing some of their most creative work to the audience of more than 1,500 beauty professionals.
Each hair legend brought their protégés – the legends of tomorrow – onstage to show their talents to the crowd at the Knight Carnival Center in Miami. “What a show!” exclaimed Debra Neill, CEO of Neill Corporation. “I’ve never felt such energy, such enthusiasm and such electricity in one room. These artists are at the top of their game for a reason – they truly know what it means to create beauty and to educate us in that. They inspire us all to be better artists, better technicians, better people.”
Tom Petrillo, founder and CEO of The Salon People, added, “I’m extremely proud of all of the artists and their offsprings. This was two days filled with great hair, incredible inspiration and education.”
Offspring Miami Jam secured its place in hair show history, becoming the ultimate in collaboration as both legends and protégés shared their passion, inspiration and skill on stage to educate the excited audience. The show, which took place over two days, was produced by Michael Baker, creative director for Neill Corporation, Jim Petrillo, president of Aveda Institutes in Florida and Kelli McGushin, executive director of shows and events for Aveda Corporation. Crowd pleaser Baker – a hairdressing legend in his own right and protégé to Dwight Miller, who was later honored on stage – emceed the fun-filled event.
Ray Civello with Civello Creative Team
Aveda alum and world-renowned hairdresser, entrepreneur and mentor Ray Civello opened the show, getting right to the point with a demonstration of a beautiful straight, mid-length asymmetrical cut. Gradually joining him on stage was his Canadian Aveda creative team – Tristin Morrison, Dylan Sit, Morgan Roy, Marta Murray and Joseph Xibilia – who collectively generated five more stunning displays of artistic talent.
Vivienne Mackinder with Harmonie Redman
Mackinder and protégé Harmonie Redman’s presentation represented inspiration from each decade from 1920 to present day. Learn what inspires Mackinder with her 3DVD special! The roaring 20s and depression-era 30s dos featured a new twist on the curled bob with bright red hair contrasting with black. The 1940s gave the crowd some glam updos and from the 50s and 60s came more radical shapes and colors before the ultimate fusion of punk and rock to end the segment.
Van Council with Van Michael Creative Team
Van Council, owner of five Aveda Lifestyle Salons, introduced the crowd to his multi-award-winning Van Michael Creative Team consisting of Brandon Darragh, Jeffrey Goldenstein and Dan Holzberger, who entertained the crowd with their collection of edgy – and somewhat androgynous – styles. Our hearts were still pumping from their NAHA “Red” presentation, so this just added to our excitement. The show ended on a surreal level, in true Van Michael fashion, with a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-inspired presentation of oompa-loompas and brightly-colored hair extensions.
Ruth Roche with Bradley Irion
Roche always has a good time on stage, and this show was no exception. Between their banter, dancing – and great styling, Ruth Roche and Bradley Irion brought a new meaning to the idea of “fun” this time around. Between their bobs, interesting color techniques and St. Tropez-inspired dos, the chemistry between the legend and her protégé was undeniable.
David Wagner with Maureen Anlauf
David Wagner, owner of 10 Aveda Lifestyle Salons and Spas, reminded the crowd that they were all in the business of “making someone’s day” – get his best-selling book- Life as a Daymaker – and paid homage to his own mentor – Horst Rechelbacher. Then he introduced his protégé – Juut creative director and 2006 NAHA Hairstylist of the Year Maureen Anlauf, whose collection was inspired by some of Rechelbacher’s original designs.
Tim Hartley with Ricardo Dinis
Hartley provided a satisfying finish to Sunday’s shows, wowing the crowd with exquisite shapes and inspired cutting, elevated by the brilliant coloring from Aveda’s David Adams. Hartley then introduced his protégé Ricardo Dinis, creative director of Aveda’s Lifestyle Salon and Spa in Madrid, who created a beautifully simple, striking graphic cut.
Ginger Boyle with Carrie Kennenbeck and Geno Chapman
“Lights, Camera, Action, Scandal” are the words Boyle used to open her Hollywood-inspired segment. Boyle is a master of understated beauty, and her protégés follow suit. Architectured, asymmetrical and androgynous cuts dominated Kennenbeck’s portion while Chapman focused on a sculpted bob. Avant-garde takes on updos ended the segment.
Antoinette Beenders with Allen Ruiz
Beenders and Ruiz ended the show on a dramatic note with a sublime yet outrageous presentation. Taking inspiration from the event’s location – the Carnival Center – Beenders and Ruiz made magic happen as they brought three carnival-inspired clowns with tall, cone-shaped hair on stage.
The mission of Offspring Miami Jam was to inspire today’s hairdressers to take their work to the next level, while simultaneously providing solid education. We decided that the show went above and beyond our expectations, and we can’t wait for next year’s show!
