School’s In Session… at the brand new Paul Mitchell Corporate School, located in the Los Angeles area of Sherman Oaks, California. Last Monday, December 18th, I watched as John Paul Mitchell Systems CEO John Paul DeJoria, Dean of Paul Mitchell the Schools Winn Claybaugh and Co-owner and Director of the Sherman Oaks Paul Mitchell the School location Paul Mantea cut the red ribbon at the opening ceremony.

The 15,000-square-foot steel and glass open studio space in the Galleria is designed to train as many as 400 students at a time. Mantea cites his choice for the school’s central Los Angeles location as a need to fill the gap for the eager student market present in Los Angeles, stating, “If I can quote John Paul, this is like filling the Grand Canyon.” The Sherman Oaks Paul Mitchell the School location will work and educate exclusively with JPMS products, and instructors and students will follow an aggressive ongoing educational and cultural development program to mirror that of Paul Mitchell the School in Costa Mesa, California.

It was obvious in speaking with Winn about the phenomenal growth and success of the schools that this was not unexpected.  “When I first sat down with John Paul DeJoria over 6 years ago to discuss a major expansion of the school that I founded in 1984, to then open Paul Mitchell Schools across the country (and soon to be Canada and Mexico), I knew it would become huge.  First, we had the name PAUL MITCHELL–recognized by all high school and college kid, which is where our potential students come from.  Secondly, I was partnering with the man himself… John Paul has made a promise to never sell his company, and he is still here and very proactive in the beauty industry.  Never underestimate the power of a culture that is based on love, family, and fun.  Although we now have more than 75 PM schools across the U.S., it’s not about 75 buildings. Monday’s school opening was planned and orchestrated by the new school’s enrolled Future Professionals students. The school’s 11 month program’s next crew of Future professionals begins on January 9, 2007.
