Mary at Shear Genius Season Finale Party in NYC

What a blast hairdressers are!  While you can question reality TV shows (I gave them up ten years ago for lent and never looked back!), you can’t question the passion, fun, energy and sincerity of a hairdresser. What fun it was Wednesday night at the finale party- hanging with the ever “legend in his own mind”, Dr. Boogie, who was as funny and quick witted as ever in real life—and cute, too- sporting his scrubs and a beautiful woman on his arm.  Then, there was Daisy with amazing  energy and, I know nobody will believe this, but she actually talks faster than me. Onto Anthony who was very  sweet and humble (and very generous when my camera died and he let me borrow his!) …. and who could ever forget the ever feuding Tabatha and Tyson!

Here’s what I learned. Tabatha’s not the biatch we all thought she was on the show. She’s beautiful and smart and well liked by the rest of the gang.  Having said that, I think it would be deadly to be on her bad side.  On the other hand, Tyson, the sweet, soft, gentle victim of Tabatha’s constant attacks is not the cupcake we all thought.  He’s sharp as a tack and has this sort of pent up passion for success with the same force as a missile ready to launch! I read him all wrong!

See the Tabatha and Tyson Show Down at Stylist Choice Awards!

Evangelin was sweet and helpful (thanks for the help with my little lipstick drama) and was thrilled when I told her I’d been with Garren recently who pulled some new hedge clippers out of his closet- a gift from a client!  And, of course, my Chicago home boy, Ben, who was sexy and unassuming in his realistic vision of his 10 minutes of fame.  All the contestants shared our sentiments of ‘who is Rene and why was he here?’  Roy Teeluck was very nice and Michael Carl from Allure was clearly enjoying his new found friends in the hairdressing community—certainly not the stuffy designers he’s used to drinking martinis with!

The evening started with two hours of cocktails, which I spent double fisting- both excited and nervous about how Vidal’s appearance would be on the finale!  Having negotiated his deal to be on the show (we’d only say yes if he could talk about Hairdressers Unlocking Hope) I was concerned about how it would be edited.  And, while it was almost entirely edited out, who can question the power of TV…….uggggggghhhh and ahhhhhhhh!  The response and activity since the show for our charitable cause has been phenomenal!  And, it’s just the beginning! See Vidal and the rest of us at Stylist Choice Awards next weekend in Orlando!

After drinks, we all ended up in the theatre at the hotel and watched as Anthony took away the title of Shear Genius.  I’d like to thank him and all the other contestants for their incredibly kind words about behindthechair.com and look forward to seeing many of them this weekend at Stylist Choice Awards.
