Bobohizan by Damien Rinaldo

When the spirit calls, who will be brave enough to answer? In the Kadasan Dusun tribe of Sabah in Borneo, it’s the women who carry the torch. The high priestess protects the villagers, healing the sick and mending the injured. She walks the delicate border between man and spirit, appeasing the skull god and offering sacrifices to keep evil forces at bay. She is the Bobohizan—the champion of healing and protection. She is the village’s most beautiful. But where does real beauty come from? Is it in the pleasantness of the eye or the war-torn strength of the soul? In his new collection, Damien Rinaldo explores a more organic beauty, raw and powerful and straight from the heart.
