Hairdressers Unlocking Hope, the unprecedented campaign created by Vidal Sassoon and Mary Rector-Gable, is quickly becoming one of the most successful campaigns in the industry. After witnessing the destruction of one of America’s most beloved cities, both Vidal and Mary knew something needed to be done to restore hope and rebuild homes in the Gulf coast areas.
“Our goal is to build 18 homes this fall in St. Tammany, a neighborhood that Habitat has put aside just for our hairdressing village. It is amazing to see how our community of hairdressers and companies are coming together as one for our campaign. New Orleans needs so much help and as an industry, this is our way to give back to Vidal for all he’s done for us by honoring him with his dream of building homes for those in need,” says Mary Rector-Gable. One company after another has pledged the $85,000 needed to build a house through Habitat for Humanity for the Hurricane Katrina victims who, after almost two years later, are still without a place to call home. So far TIGI, PureOlogy, Paul Mitchell Schools, Neill Corporation, Bumble and bumble, The John Allan Club, PSC and Haircuttery, among others, have generously lent their hearts, hands and pocketbooks to the cause. We were thrilled to learn that, because of everyone’s dedication to this campaign, over $1 million has already been raised, and now almost 20 families will be handed the keys to their very own brand new home come November. Our third photo shoot for Hairdressers Unlocking Hope is proof that this industry is determined to come together to show the world what hairdressers’ hands and hearts are capable of. For this shoot, we headed back to where it all began: New York City, and found that more had changed than just the weather. The first time we traveled to the Big Apple back in January, Hairdressers Unlocking Hope was still a baby, and though our excitement over the possibilities of what could come of this unprecedented campaign could barely be concealed, we were unsure of how it would be received by everyone else in the industry. This time, the excitement we had been feeling all along was felt by everyone.
Word of the campaign’s success spread like wildfire throughout the industry, so it was no wonder that top hairdressers showed up at Eagles Nest Studios, eager to lend their hands to the cause. Industry greats like Sally Hershberger, Garren, Zak Mascolo, Peter Butler, Oscar Blandi, Rita Hazan, Pierre Ouaknine, Thom Priano, Dennis Ratner, John Allan, Michael Baker and Nicole Wootten and Coby Alcantar from Bb. didn’t hesitate for a second to get half naked and let The Powder Group paint on their hands. In fact, they were excited about doing so.
As each hairdresser arrived at the studio, they picked out their favorite Sassoon t-shirt and necklace, then sat down with us for a chat. Get Your Sassoon Tees and Keys!
We talked about the families who lost their homes in the storm and discussed the many personal stories we received from those families. Every hairdresser was invested in the process, reading the letters themselves and discussing how they wanted to portray a particular story. Some, like Sally Hershberger, Rita Hazan and Peter Butler, wanted to represent the raw, emotional, angry stories, while others like Dennis Ratner and Garren and Thom, felt a connection to the stories of perseverance, love and determination.
John Allan’s dedication to the campaign goes beyond the photo shoot. The John Allan Company has signed on to sponsor a Habitat house as well. “When I read the stories that day, it was cool to know that we would actually be building a house as a representive in the industry,” he says.
Vidal would have been proud to see such a diverse group of hairdressers get so involved in helping to realize his dream. Everyone there also spent quality time either getting to know each other or catching up on old times. Michael Baker had an unexpected surprise when he showed up at the shoot. “The highlight of my day was reconnecting with my old friend Peter [Butler], a long-time friend who I hadn’t seen in ages,” he says.

Listening to Garren speak passionately about why he loves “living the dream and the reality” (doing both editorial and salon work), hearing Sally Hershberger talk about dividing her time between celebrity and other trendy clients at her salon, then finally trying to eavesdrop while Oscar Blandi and Pierre Ouaknine conversed in foreign languages to one another proves one thing: Vidal’s dream of bringing the industry together is certainly coming true, and now we can add 12 more powerful, provocative photographs to our already stunning group.
