‘More Is More’ Hair Trend: Crystals, Scarves, Ribbons & Embellishments

From hangin’ backstage with lead stylists to people watching Instagram models, celebs and editors for street style trends, New York Fashion Week showed up with hair accessories of every kind—from scrunchies and ribbons to rhinestones and chains. So what does this mean for your everyday clients in the salon? Here’s what.

Invest in some on-trend hair accessories (or craft materials?) and get creative, or ask clients to bring in their own hair accessories to customize every look. Start here with the inspiration, products and materials you need to embellish any look.

1. Veronica Beard – Kevin Hughes (@hairbybeleven) for Moroccanoil®️

Show Notes: Low ponies are better with hair scarves, plus they’re our favorite way to hide an elastic by double-knotting and creating a one-sided bow. But before you wrap it up, mist with Moroccanoil®️ Luminous Hairspray Strong for undone, soft texture and a strong hold.

2. Marc Jacobs – Guido Palau (@guidopalau) for Redken

Show Notes: Chic accents like barrettes and hats were used to emphasize natural beauty with simplicity. “I’m using Redken Triple Dry 15 to get this soft, modern texture, with a hat to complement that’s a bit of a nod to the past,” dishes Guido.

Spotted: The iconic Christy Turlington rocking a knit beanie with feathers.

Show Notes: Floral embellishments are the ultra-femme spring accessory we’ve been waiting all year for. Before placing each flower, apply Wella Professionals EIMI Stay Essential Hairspray and Dry Me Dry Shampoo. Then, use a ghd Professional Platinum™ Flat Iron to seal the knots and secure the look.

4. Sandy Liang – Mandee Tauber (@mandeetauber) for Oribe

Show Notes: This black satin headband and micro fringe combo is serving some cool-girl realness that easily translates from runway to street style.

Show Notes: If chains and clips excite you, anchor strands of silver hardware onto braids and wrap into a “not your mother’s” low ponytail. Justine is officially our queen of client-friendly hair accessories—have you seen her Kitsch x Justine Marjan collab?!

6. Tibi – Frank Rizzieri (@frankrizzieri) for Aveda

Show Notes: Covering elastics with reclaimed fabric cut from extra material in the showroom? There’s nothing more Fashion Week than that. Then, secure the look into place with Aveda Air Control.

7. Mansur Gavriel – Laurent Philippon (@laurentphilippon) for Bumble and bumble.

Show Notes: The ’80s hair scrunchie is back(stage) and is the perfect way to hold brushed-out wavy texture low and away from the face, especially when secured with Bumble and bumble. Does It All for flexible hold.

8. Area – Jawara Wauchope (@jawaraw)

Show Notes: Feelin’ the crystal power yet? These “bodega crystal braids” will make you want to bedazzle everything—including your client’s buns, braids and center part.
