Tracey Cunningham’s Celebrity Color Blends

Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham shares the "behind the bowl" details from 3 of her A-list clients dazzling hues.

Judging by her list of A-list clients, the reigning queen of the celebrity haircolor scene is Tracey Cunningham. Her chair at Meche Salon in Beverly Hills is often occupied by a high-profile star like Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Jessica Biel or Drew Barrymore. She’s also likely to pack up her brushes and bowls and head to the airport when she receives a haircolor S.O.S. from Shakira in Barcelona or Sienna Miller in London. Needless to say, Tracey not only knows the trends, she sets them. This summer, she reveals, the word to keep in mind is blended! Forget hard lines, chunky sections or high-contrast anything. Tracey’s “girls” are demanding subtle, beautifully-crafted color effects that dazzle on the street, on-screen and on the red carpet. Here are the “behind the bowl” details from some of her latest celebrity color creations!

Drew Barrymore’s Honey Blonde

A very radiant and very pregnant Drew looked lovely on the red carpet for the premiere of Blended, which co-stars Adam Sandler. To reflect Drew’s happy state of mind and compliment her lemon-yummy dress, Tracey opted for a sunny blonde hue with flecks of golden honey.

Drew’s How-To
Formula A (base): Redken Chromatics 6AA + 6N + 10-volume developer
Formula B (highlights): Redken Flashlift Blonde + 30-volume developer + 1/4 oz. Olaplex
Formula C (gloss): Redken Shades EQ Clear + Shades EQ Processing Solution

Apply Formula A to the regrowth and highlight with Formula B. Process for 10 minutes. Shampoo and condition the hair with Redken Color Extend. Gloss all strands with Formula C.

Emma Stone’s Blonde-Copper Ombré Switch

The young actress is always up for a change—especially for a film role. Recently, she was flaxen blonde for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, then switched to red for her part in Woody Allen’s Magic in the Moonlight. Her most recent transformation, according to Tracey, was designed as a happy medium between blonde and red, and the ombré effect serves as a modern alternative to strawberry blonde.

Emma’s How-To
Formula A (lowlights and base color): Redken Shades EQ 3/4 oz. 7GC + 1/4 oz. 7WN + 1 oz. Shades EQ Processing Solution
Formula B (ends): Redken Shades EQ 9CG + Shades EQ Processing Solution

Apply Formula A lowlight on topography foil, blurring Formula B through the ends. Apply Formula A to all remaining strands. Process, and when rinsing, lift the blonde ends to prevent the red shade from bleeding onto the lighter sections.

Sienna Miller’s SoCal Blonde

Even though Sienna is British through and through, she has always embraced the sun-kissed blonde shade of a Malibu native. This latest iteration is Tracey’s take on a sophisticated surfer girl.

Sienna’s How-To
Formula A (highlights): Redken Up to 7 + 1/4 oz. Olaplex ( a new additive that relinks the bonds that are broken by chemical services) + 20-volume developer
Formula B (base color): Redken Chromatics 3/4 oz. 8G + 1/4 oz. 9GC + 20-volume developer
Formula C: Redken Shades EQ equal parts 9NB + 8GG + Shades EQ Processing Solution
Formula D: Redken Shades EQ equal parts 8GG + 9AA + 8C + Shades EQ Processing Solution

Retouch highlights with Formula A and apply Formula B to the regrowth. Process for 10 minutes and remove. Apply Formula C to roots and process for 10 minutes. Remove and apply Formula D to all strands, process for 1 minute and remove. Apply balayage accents with Formula A, process, rinse, shampoo and condition hair with Redken Color Extend.
