The Price is Right: The Vivid Color Melt

This gorgeous look won Rickey the Hot Shot Award for Rainbow Shot of the Year at BTC’s 2015 #ONESHOT Hair Awards

Pastels, rainbows, metallics—these are the colors of the year. If it’s trendy and blowin’ up your client’s Instagram feed, chances are she’s on her way to your salon to show you exactly what she wants for her own funky color.

What your client might not know is how long these shades take to achieve, and how much hard work goes in to making each color design absolutely perfect. So BTC went to #ONESHOT Winner Rickey Zito @hairgod_zito to break down the price and process behind his winning look—the Vivid Color Melt. Everything from the consultation, the booking, the process and the price—we got it all. See how it’s done!

“Sometimes I’ll offer to do a client’s hair for $200 if she’ll give me freedom to do what I want. Don’t be afraid to even give it away if you can get a badass picture—that’s how you promote yourself!” says Rickey.

PRICE | $500

Consultation
“The consultation happens the same day as the color, and most of my vivid clients let me have free range. I’ll have an idea and then I’ll mix up my colors and put them on a napkin for my client to see. I choose colors strategically, but it’s all open to adjustment, and I show them what I’m going to do before I do it.”

Booking
“I work with an intern, so I always have someone to shampoo and blow-dry for me. I usually allow four hours for my expensive vivids.”

Process
“I always start by prelightening the hair to silvery white. I’m very particular about this step, and it takes the greatest amount of time. So while they’re processing, I start mixing their colors. I’ll put them on a napkin and show them and we’ll discuss. ‘Do you like this? Do you want to change this purple a bit?’ That’s how it works. For this particular client, she just sat in my chair and asked for vivids, and it worked out perfectly. I applied PRAVANA VIVIDS Purple and Black to the root area and created a shadow effect. Then I melted VIVIDS Purple, VIVIDS Magenta, VIVIDS Orange and VIVIDS Yellow throughout.”

Price
“I don’t price by the hour, I price by the service. But if you are building a vivids clientele, don’t be afraid to give discounts. Sometimes you’ve gotta give to get. Sometimes I’ll offer to do a client’s hair for $200 if she’ll give me freedom to do what I want. Don’t be afraid to even give it away if you can get a badass picture—that’s how you promote yourself!”
