The Price is Right: Celebrity Colorist Danny Moon Talks Price
He’s the man behind the manes of Katy Perry and Nicole Richie, and one of the first artists to put vivid color in the spotlight. Here’s how this pro views the process and the pricing of major color transformations.
Danny suggests starting big color projects in the morning so you have the stamina to continue them throughout the day.
PROCESS | “Most clients who want to do a vibrant color already have color on their hair, so I determine how long their new color will take and make them aware of the price. I start with a color removing solution and then a bleach test strand. This gives me an idea of how long the client will be with me. I am super patient and I do not rush the process. It sometimes takes all day so I recommend starting these big color projects in the morning so you have the stamina to continue them. The longest I’ve ever spent with a client is nine hours. I always try to get it done in one session.”
PRICE | “I charge between $125 to $150 an hour for color correction/personal color. You have to charge enough to be compensated for spending an entire day. The value is your time and the integrity of the hair. It can add up if clients are there all day, and it’s better to create in a happy mindset. Value yourself and your work. I’ve charged up to $1,500 for a session—they were jobs that required me to pull out all of my tricks! Take risks and educate yourself to produce a hair experience that is worth every penny.”
