Why Jay Sebring’s New Documentary Should Be On Your Movie Watchlist

Right now, you might be wondering why you’re reading an article on BTC about an upcoming film, Old Hollywood glamour and the Manson murders. Oh, you didn’t know that’s what this is about? Well let us tell you, this is a story about a cultural hair icon who defined the history of men’s grooming—and captured attention from stars like Sharon Tate, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and Quentin Tarantino. Did we mention this story ends with the infamous tragic tale of the Charles Manson family? Keep reading to find out why and watch the movie trailer below!

Hit Rewind To The Late ’60s

Celebrity hair designer and men’s grooming legend Jay Sebring almost had it all. For over a decade, he was known for styling Hollywood’s iconic names like Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Marlon Brando, The Rat Pack, Elvis Presley and Sam Cooke. He had a LA salon on the corner of Melrose and Fairfax and even developed his own line of self-titled hair products. Total stud, right?! Jay had briefly been engaged to movie star Sharon Tate (more about this later…) and was charging $50 a haircut—this was pretty unheard of at this point.

So, how does SoCal’s most glamorous hairdresser become a faceless victim to one of the most infamous cult murders in history?

“Sharon Tate And Four Others Killed”

Fast forward to a hot summer evening in early August of 1969. Jay canceled a trip to Las Vegas to spend the evening with Sharon Tate and their friends Abigail Folger and Wojciech Frykowski. Sharon had married Roman Polanski and was pregnant with their first child, but the two remained close friends. That’s when tragedy strikes, just after midnight when the four friends were murdered by the Manson Family—the cult of killers who followed Charles Manson. In that moment, with a headline that read, “Sharon Tate And Four Others Killed,” the man who almost had it all had become a nameless victim in an infamous murder story.

Countless media reports and decades of press later, this story would even wind up in a Quentin Tarantino blockbuster, “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.” The 2019 film starred Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie. Click here to read more about Jay’s role in the movie!
