The Hair Festival That Took Over Miami

close formula

In Miami, it’s usually all about that sun. This past weekend, it was all about the hair, and let ustell you, it was HOT. Over 3,000 hairdressers, salon owners, industry legends and social media icons hit up the party city for Luxury Brand Partners’ Front Row. The event was four full days of top-of-the-line education and festival-style entertainment. Located in one of Miami’s coolest neighborhoods, Front Row boasted a mainstage and “carnival” complete with pop-up vendors, music, art and food trucks. It was a weekend you didn’t want to miss… which is why BTC jetted down to South Beach to get the scoop and totally HOOK. YOU. UP.

The ‘carnival’ was located at Wynwood Mana in a gallery-like space
complete with food trucks, music and perfect photo ops!

The Action Started Early
Officially, the event kicked off Saturday night at Story Night Club, where Luxury Brand Partners held a special VIP viewing for the premiere of Howard McLaren’s debut documentary, The Reset. The intense film exposed some of the hard truths behind the ever-changing beauty industry and why we must change our perspective and our ways in the salon and on social media in order to preserve the industry for future generations. The Reset includes insight from industry icons John Paul DeJoria (Paul Mitchell), Bruno and Zak Mascolo (TONI&GUY) and Eden Sassoon; industry innovators Franck Izquierdo (IGK), David Thurston of the Butterfly Circus and Katie Lyn Christoffersen owner of Cheeky Strut Salon in Grand Rapids, MI.
Calling this film-making experience the hardest thing he has ever done throughout his career, Howard truly took the viewer on a powerful journey, and the audience was loving it.

Lifetime Achievement
Throughout the documentary, Howard highlighted the work of John Paul DeJoria, for being a true pioneer in the industry. From teaching the importance of giving back to always valuing the stylists and bringing a major amount of credibility to the industry as a whole—Luxury Brand Partners’ President Tev Finger presented John with a Lifetime Achievement Award for representing everything the hair industry should be.

Oribe kicked off Mainstage Day 1 with the hilarious, sassy and totally inappropriate comedian/actress Natasha Leggero, known for her raunchy roast of Justin Bieber and commonly seen on Chelsea Lately; she was the perfect introduction for the event that was a combination of entertaining and educational.

Tev Finger opened the education portion of the event by thanking everyone in the room, highlighting the importance of education in our industry and always remembering to give back. “Why do we do this?” Tev asked the audience when he took the stage Sunday. “We do this to celebrate the craft, to inspire and elevate our industry. This is for you. We set the trends and keep America looking pretty.”

Oribe Educators included: Joey George, Ronnie Stam, James Pecis, Coby Alcantar, Vivienne Mackinder, Nicci Welsh, The Goldwell Master Color Team and finally, Kien Hoang who closed the show with his 2015 Fashion Show hit, THE BLONDS.

Vivienne Mackinder, known as the hairdresser’s hairdresser, explained how to best style your client based on their face shape. And Kien Hoang closed the night with his show-stopping moment from 2015 NYFW, The BLONDS.

From Good to Great
Day 2 of Front Row opened with a keynote address from best-selling author and motivational speaker Jim Collins. And motivating it was. There was a certain mood during Jim’s address, and it’s a vibe we’ve seen for some time now stretching across the industry—never settle for being good, strive to be truly great. You hear it from your favorite artists, you see it on social media, and this weekend, we heard it from the man himself.

V76, Smith & Cult and IGK

Mainstage day 2 looked and sounded more like a festival than a hair show… and the audience LOVED it.  V76 rocked out—literally—with drums on stage and tributes to David Bowie; Smith and Cult killed it with a Spring Breakers inspired theme; and the cool guys from IGK closed the night by bringing out stylists from their New York, Miami and Los Angeles locations.
