The Business of Blonde

Are you looking to expand your color business by specializing in blonding services? It might seem like a lofty goal, but it’s definitely attainable with the right guidance. For instance, if you want to become a “blonding master”, it’s important to start by immersing yourself in all different types of blondes and learning how to properly achieve the best results. This might seem obvious, but it takes time to study which blonde will look best on your olive skin client or on a client whose skin color has pink undertones. Wanting the crème de la crème of tips for growing your business, we turned to “lived-in color” expert, owner of Ramirez | Tran Salon in Beverly Hills and Joico Celebrity LumiShine Ambassador, Johnny Ramirez, who shared some advice for getting your blonding business up and running smoothly.

1. No Two Blondes Are the Same.
Blondes come in so many different shades—you have brunettes introducing blonde with the ombré and working their way into lighter color such as my lived-in technique. My blonde style is not high-maintenance and never looks like the client just came in for a fresh batch of highlights—it’s lived-in color that can grow out and still looks great five months later.

 2. Stay On-Trend.
Keep an eye on models walking the runway and the latest celebrity hues that are trending. If there is a new coloring technique out there, make sure you know it. Clients gain your trust when it comes to achieving new and up-to-date looks.

3. Don’t Damage the Hair.
This may be a no-brainer, but be sure that whatever you do to their color isn’t going to damage it and recommend products that will help them maintain hair health and color longevity at home.

4. Don’t Assume!
You know how the old saying goes about assuming things…well the same is true of your clients. Just because they have colored their hair before doesn’t mean they know how to properly maintain their haircolor to keep it looking vibrant when they leave your chair. Especially for blondes! Blonde hair needs a lot of extra T.L.C.

5. Show Off Your Skills.
In today’s competitive world, you need to be on social media to truly stand out. If you create an amazing butter blonde or some stunning balayage, be sure to take before, in-process and after shots and show them off on your salon’s website, your Facebook page and on Instagram. Not only can you attract new clients this way, but it’s also a great way to show off some ideas to existing clients looking for a change.

Now that you’re on your way to becoming a blonding expert, master one of Johnny’s signature lived-in formulas, and don’t forget to snap a before, in-process and after pic to showcase on social media!
