We’re living in a time where extensions aren’t a secret—in fact, more and more clients come in begging for them! If you’re already certified in GL Tapes from Great Lengths Extensions (or you WANT to be), you’re on your way to making more money. We went to extension master Eric Vaughn (@realericvaughn) for five tape-in extension tips you can’t forget, so keep reading!

EXTENSIONS AND PLATINUM RETOUCHES:

Eric has plenty of platinum-haired clients who also have extensions, and this is his game plan: He doesn’t do a root touch-up on hair with an extension. “I feel it will create unevenness,” he says.

• If her extensions are in, Eric’s root touch-up is focused at the top and around her face.
• For a full root touch-up, remove the tape-ins first, complete the retouch application, and wash, condition and re-tape the tape-ins.

EXTENSION PLACEMENT:

Try this trick to determine how far up the head you can apply extensions: Flick the hair (see the gif below) to see the growth pattern. Once you identify the growth pattern, you know you can stop the extensions below any swirls or whorls, because if you go above or around it, the tapes will show.

BLENDING EXTENSIONS:

GL Tapes are triple-drawn, meaning they are incredibly thick and luxurious from root to tip, so blending is crucial to avoid looking like she’s wearing extensions. Eric uses 50% notching shears because they leave soft edges. See his technique below.

STYLING EXTENSIONS:

Focus styling on the midlengths of the hair—this is where the client’s natural length and the extensions have the most separation.

CLIENT HOME CARE:

Extensions last longer if clients care for them properly. Follow these tips:

• Show her how to wash her hair—Eric tells his clients to clip their hair up and use gentle massaging motions, working section by section.
• Use only sulfate-free, sulfite-free and sodium chloride-free shampoo and conditioner, like the Great Lengths Daily Moisture Shampoo and Great Lengths Conditioner 60 Sec.
• Keep oils and conditioning agents away from the roots, as these products will disintegrate the bonds in the tape.
• Avoid touching the tapes with flat irons or curling irons.
• Blow-dry carefully—your client SHOULD lightly blow-dry the roots after a shower so the tapes aren’t sopping wet for too long. She should NOT direct very hot blow-dryer heat on the tapes for a long time.
