Super Sleek Ponytail, Ballerina Bun and 3 More Holiday Styles

close formula

The holidays mean three things: a busy salon, lots of clients and tons of holiday updos. From work parties to family parties, your client needs a look she loves and her friends all want! So for inspiration, we went to the place where hair trends are born—the U.K.! Here are five styling how-tos from the pros at Denman. Their brushes are top of the line, and these styling how-tos can be recreated in the salon or serve as inspiration for creating your own signature holiday style!

How-To: Fishtail Braid

1. Detangle hair with a Denman D90L Tangle Tamer Ultra to gently remove knots and tangles.

2. Prep with hairspray, then backcomb the hair with a Denman D91 Dressing Out Brush.

3. Pull hair around to one side and spilt it into two sections.

4. Take strands of hair from the edge of the left section and cross it over into the middle and underneath the right section.

5. Repeat this process on the right section, taking strands of hair from the outside and crossing them over into the middle and underneath the left section. Continue with this technique until you reach the very end of your braid, and secure with an elastic.

6. Finish with hairspray.

Pro Tip: This look is best created on long hair; however, you can use hair extensions on your short-haired clients and get the same results.

How-To: The Classic Beehive

1. Detangle hair with a Denman D90L Tangle Tamer Ultra to gently remove knots and tangles.

2. Use the Denman D91 Dressing Out Brush and divide the top section of hair into three separate sections using the pin tail. Keep an additional section loose at the front for the fringe.

3.
Apply hairspray, then backcomb the sections.

4. After backcombing, smooth the hair back into a bouffant using the Denman D82 Natural Boar Bristle Brush and pin into place with bobby pins.

5. Gather the bottom section of hair into a low ponytail and twist it up to create a French Twist. Pin the twist into place with bobby pins.

Pro Tip: Tell your client that a dark eye and plenty of mascara will really make her eyes pop with this style.

How-To: Super Sleek Pony

1. Blow-dry the hair with the Denman D83 Paddle Brush to straighten the hair.

2. Using the Denman D3 Styling Brush, begin to smooth the hair back from the face, removing all the bumps.

3. Gather the hair back at the top of the head, leaving a very small section of hair out from the bottom of the ponytail. Secure the ponytail using an elastic.

4. Wrap the loose section of hair around the base of the ponytail to hide the elastic, and secure it with a bobby pin.

Pro Tip: For a more striking look, suggest your client add a statement necklace to their outfit (it’ll make the hairstyle pop!).

How-To: Side-Swept, Ballerina Bun

1. Blow-dry the hair with the Denman Head Hugger Brush to achieve natural volume and curl in the hair.

2. Gently backcomb the crown of the hair with the Denman D91 Dressing Out Brush for added volume and movement.

3. Gather the hair to one side and place into a low ponytail situated just behind the ear, and secure with an elastic.

4. Fold the ponytail back on itself to create a bun shape and secure with a second elastic.

5. Gently begin to pull at the bun to loosen the curls. Pull some curls out and pin them to the head using bobby pins. If there are any curls that have fallen out of the bun, create a loop and pin it back into the bun.

Pro Tip: Add a cute headband or pin to the bun for a little something extra!

How-To: Rocker Chic

1. Blow-dry with the Denman Freeflow D31 Brush to create volume. Be sure to concentrate the air flow at the roots to help create the front quiff.

2. Spray the front section of the hair with hairspray and backcomb it using the Denman D91 Dressing Out Brush.

3. Once the front of the hair is backcombed, use the Denman D82 Natural Boar Bristle Brush to gently smooth the hair back into a quiff shape, then pin it at the crown of the head to secure in place.

4. Roughly scrape the rest of the hair back using your fingers, and secure it into a high ponytail using an elastic. Backcomb the ponytail to give it a little bit of texture, then finish with hairspray.

Pro Tip: For a truly rocker-chic look, suggest a deep plum lipstick for your client.
