Scalp Issues? It’s a Guy Thing, Too!
Scalp issues?! Yep, it’s not just a ladies thing. Oiliness and flaky scalps can happen to the guys out there, too. But is it a dry scalp issue or is it dandruff? Or maybe it’s both? BTC has a few great tips for determining the difference between the two and for keeping all of your male clients’ scalps healthy and happy.
1. Dry or Dandruff?
A lot of guys think they have dandruff when in fact, the condition is really dry scalp, explains Bill Kochanski for Woody’s Grooming. So before he breaks out the Head & Shoulders, recommend a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to see if extra moisture will do the trick.
2. Dry and Dandruff?
Even if he’s under a doc’s care for dandruff, moisturizing is still a good idea, believes Dean Banowetz. “Dandruff shampoos can strip the scalp of moisture,” he says, “so follow up with moisture. I like high quality argan oil—I massage it into the scalp with my fingertips. It’s soothing and calming and won’t make the hair greasy. It’s also great for beards.”
3. Grin and Tonic
According to renowned British barber, educator and consultant Sheriff Mehmet, the old-fashioned tonic is making a comeback in the UK. “Tonics are great for scalp health,” he believes. I use Jack Dean Eau De Portugal—it’s a classic. When massaged into the scalp regularly, it helps reduce hair loss, moisturizes the scalp and prevents flaking. Plus, it’s a great add-on service for barbers to increase revenue and enhance the client experience!
