Rita Ora and Tori Kelly Stun on the VMAs Red Carpet

Rita Ora’s Interlaced Pony
The best way to offset any sexy, little black dress? Smooth tresses of course! After he saw what dress Rita would be rocking for MTV’s Video Music Awards, stylist Chris Appleton knew just what to do. “We have a lot of fun creating different looks for Rita,” he says. “For this look, I was inspired by the paneling on her dress. I wanted to bring that detailing into her hair to create an overall look that was cohesive.” Here’s how to get it!

1. Prep the hair with Matrix Biolage Cleansing Conditioner Anti Frizz Leave in Treatment.

2. Blow-dry the hair using a combination of Style Link Smooth Setter Smoothing Cream and Style Link Turbo Dryer. Use a flat brush while blow-drying the hair to give it a smooth, sleek look.

3. Divide the hair into clean sections with Style Link Shape Switcher, tying off each section.

Next, create six ponytails that are interconnected, and apply Style Link Heat Buffer before flat ironing out the look.

5. Finish it off with some spritzes of Style Link Style Fixer to ensure that the look stays put all night.

Note: Stay away from using anything volumizing, or anything with too much of a dry texture—you want to keep this look very smooth and sleek!

Tori Kelly’s Way-High Waves

You know what they say—the bigger, the better. Curly girls can get a party started like no one else. So for this year’s VMAs, to offset her sleek, sexy look, stylist Nikki Providence decided to give Tori’s luscious locks an extra boost. “Tori was blessed with lots of beautiful naturally curly hair, and when you have curly hair, the most important thing is to keep it healthy and use products that support the natural texture,” Nikki advises. See how it’s done!

1. Use Biolage Cleansing Conditioner to prep the hair, as it cleans but doesn’t remove any natural oils.

2. When the hair is wet, apply Style Link Volume Builder at the roots.

3. Next, spread a generous amount of Style Link Smooth Setter with a few drops of Style Link Volume Booster at the roots throughout the midlengths, making sure to distribute it evenly through the ends.

4. Part the hair deeply on one side, then take 2 inch sections of the hair and twist them into ropes. Diffuse gently without disturbing the twists until the hair is completely dry.

5. Using your hands, shake the hair out at the roots to boost volume and separate the curls slightly. If any areas need a boost, now is the time to use a medium sized curling iron to touch up waves—make sure to keep the natural movement in the hair; you don’t want to make every section uniform!

6. At the roots, use Style Link Height Riser, and finish with Style Link Volume Fixer to keep the volume up high and red carpet fabulous!
