Razor-Cutting: Removing Weight

close formula

The goal with razor-cutting layers is to create soft ends and lots of texture. To do this, you’ll need to remove weight throughout the haircut. We know this is easier said than done, and that’s why we hosted an exclusive BTC STUDIOS Facebook Live about everything razor related with Bumble and Bumble’s Bronwen Robinson! Bronwen completed a midlength chop with edgy layers and a shaggy fringe, and within hours, the video reached more than 1,500,000 people! Check out her tips for removing weight with a razor, and watch the full video below.

The incredible before and after.

  • Start the cut in the area that is going to make the biggest impact. Why? You’ll need to watch and monitor that section throughout the entire cut. This is why Bronwen started this cut in the fringe section.

  • When doing a razor cut, always section with respect to the head shape and density of the hair. And remember, you’re going to be removing weight within these sections so they shouldn’t be too small, otherwise the hair can end up looking too thin.

Sections can be bigger than normal when cutting with a razor. This makes it easier to remove weight.

  • Razor-cut the weight before the length so that when you take the length out, you have already removed weight through where the line/guide is going to be cut. If you remove the weight after razor-cutting the length, you’d have to stop before reaching the ends.

Remember this when removing weight: with skinny hair, cut out only skinny strands!

  • As a rule of thumb: If working with skinny hair, only cut out skinny lines of weight, and always take the density and haircolor (if the client has highlights and lowlights) into consideration when razor-cutting.

  • If there are more lowlights, you can balance out the color by removing dark sections of weight. If there are more highlights, balance color by removing lighter areas of weight.
