Learn This Technique For Creating Dimensional Brunettes
There’s nothing better than dimension—those ribbons of contrasting highs and lows that give hair a naturally sun-kissed effect! That’s why BTC Team Member Eric Vaughn (@realericvaughn) is dishing out his lightening and toning techniques for breaking up all-over brunettes and adding contrast. Check it out below, then snag his best tips for avoiding unwanted brassy tones!

Get The Steps Below

  1. Create babylights, teasy lights or highlights all over and process past Level 7 to 8, aka “the orange stage.”
  2. Then apply a shadow root and process for a minimum of 20 minutes. Eric recommends adding Wella Professionals WellaPlex N°1 Bond Maker to every color formula to lighten without compromising the integrity of the hair, especially when lifting brunettes!
  3. Here’s the key: When applying the shadow root, leave out the hairline to create the appearance of a Level 7 and a lighter base. “Using permanent color to achieve a lighter base always turns brassy,” shares Eric. “This technique will allow the hair to fade lighter without the brass.”

Use This Tip To Fight Warmth While Lifting

“Any time I am lightening a dark base, I will use Wella Professionals BLONDOR Multi-Blonde Powder Lightener,” shares Eric. “It has a blueish green base that helps to fight warmth while lifting.” Eric recommends either using it on its own or mixing it with Wella Professionals BLONDOR Lightener. Whether it’s color, lightener or toners, he always adds WellaPlex N°1 Bond Maker to EVERY formula to enhance color results and maintain integrity.

Try Multiple Lightening Techniques For Dimension

Eric recommends combining multiple lightening techniques on his clients to create a variety of tones. For example: Create babylights throughout the hair, then use a teasy light technique on the hair between foils. This will achieve dimension throughout with maximum brightness on the ends.
