Kim K’s Colorist Shares His Platinum Upkeep Tips

There are two reasons you know Chris Appleton (@chrisappleton1), Color Wow Global Artistic Director. One: because he is hairdresser to super celebs like like Kim Kardashian West, J.Lo, Ariana Grande and Rita Ora. And two: because he is EXTREMELY easy on the eyes 😉. We especially love his hair, which is usually platinum silver-blonde and rooty. He gave BTC the scoop on platinum blonde upkeep—plus some gratuitous pics because have you SEEN him?!

“My hair is like a child. Being blonde is a lot of work,” Chris says. When he crossed the pond from the United Kingdom to LA about two years ago, he didn’t wait long to transform himself from his natural brunette to an über platinum.

But just like any platinum client, the upkeep CAN be too much (even Kim K admitted this—it’s how she and Chris sparked the rooty blonde trend!). “[My hair] really grew out because I couldn’t do it! It takes me at least seven hours to do it,” Chris shares. “And I like it about two to three weeks after, when the root pops out and it’s kind of lived-in.”

Here are his go-to products to maintain his cool rooted look:

“I use Color Wow Brass Banned Mousse for Blonde Hair to tone the hair,” Chris shares. “I put it on when my hair is wet to keep that ashy color.”
“I try not to wash my hair too often—less is more,” he says.
When he does shampoo, he maintains it with Color Wow Color Security Shampoo because it has zero sulfates, silicones, thickening ingredients, conditioning agents or pearlizing ingredients.
