How To Transition Warm Haircolor For Fall & Winter

We all have those clients who are obsessed with spicy warm tones (and we love them for it!)rose golds, reds, gingers and caramelized brunettes, OH MY! It’s no surprise that every fall and winter, they want to go darker with their haircolor. That’s why we’re breaking down tips and color formulas for transitioning throughout the seasons while keeping the warmth, from repigmenting hair to dealing with faded fashion colors.

Keep scrollin’ for must-know tips and some winter-approved color formulas from BTC Visual Editor Megan Schipani, aka @shmeggsandbaconn on Instagram!

1. Repigmenting Hair: Don’t Skip This Crucial Step

When transitioning from a blonde or pastel to something darker, don’t forget to fill the hair 👏 Why is this a crucial step? The tones lost during the lifting process are warm tones, so you need to fill the hair with warm hues FIRST to go darker.

For example: When Megan’s client came in with a faded summery rose gold, she had Level 9 ends with a faded champagne tint. Her goal? To transition into a rich tortoise shell brunette. To restore the pigments that were lost when lifted to a Level 9, Megan filled the hair with copper (6C) before toning the hair.

2. Trouble With Faded Fashion Colors? Try This!

If you know that your client will want to go darker in the near future, make the transition easier nowinstead of doing heavy lifting later. Especially if they want to play with pops of pastels! That’s why, instead of using a demi or permanent color (below), Megan reached for the Aloxxi Instaboost Conditioning Color Masque to achieve a temporary rose bronze.

Why? The color faded out easily and evenly, so when she was ready to transition, there wasn’t a ton of previous color to work through.

3. Clients With Pastel PinkWhat’s Next?

It’s no surprise that your client has (or will!) try a trendy pastel pink at some point. So, what’s next? If you’re transitioning into something a bit darker for colder weather, warm up with these easy transitional colors.

  • Wine, Red & Cranberry Tones – This will enhance and accentuate the previous color––without having to remove any previous tones! After those summer months when hair is dry and damaged, this will help avoid having to pull any color out.

  • Add Depth & Dimension – Use that underlying warmth to create rich, deep reds.

  • Brunettes, This One’s For You! – *TFW your hair matches your favorite Starbucks holiday order!*  Warm up basic brunettes by adding ribbons of caramel, especially around the face frame.

  • Rich Shadow Roots & Lowlights – The easiest way to transition dull blondes and faded pastels? Creating depth with a shadow root and lowlights. Before filling, Megan uses Aloxxi ANDIAMO Express Permanent Color to melt the roots and pulls lowlight panels through for dimension with a 10-minute processing time.
