When Mary sent inspirational photos of stained glass art to all of the COLOR, Cut & Style artists for the finale reprise at the Stylist Choice Awards, Sonya Dove knew exactly what to do. The Wella Professionals Creative Ambassador outlined her model’s hair with black, and then placed panels of shimmering jewel tones within the outlines to recreate a stained glass effect. The result was so gorgeous, we asked her to share her how-to!

CUT
“I created an undercut from temple to temple using a scissor-over-comb technique,” says Sonya. “The top section was cut short above the top of the ear and gradually became longer as it progressed forward. The back was cut short on each side and came to a diagonal point at the back.”

PRELIGHTEN
Sonya prelightened the client’s Level 2 color with Wella Professionals BLONDOR Extra Cool Blonde Lightener + 40-volume developer. She applied the lightener in fine, foiled sections an inch off of the scalp, and lifted the hair to Level 9/gold. She shampooed with Wella Professionals Elements Shampoo and Conditioner.

STAINED GLASS
Her final step was to apply her stained glass colors in a random pattern on the remaining, prelightened hair to create the multi-tonal effect.
