Toners save lives. No, seriously. A toner can make or break a color service and there is nothing worse than rinsing a toner only to find an uneven canvas. We rounded up some GENIUS tricks from two toning queens to help you execute a flawless blend every time. Scroll through to see what tricks Schwarzkopf Professional Artistic Team Members Liz Haven (@lizhaven) and Josie Vilay (@josievilay) have up their sleeves!

1. Use a bottle applicator.

Both Josie and Liz are fans of the bottle application. Not only is it a time saver, but it works beautifully with liquid-based color lines like Schwarzkopf Professional’s IGORA VIBRANCE Demi-Permanent Hair Color to deliver an even application.

2. Blend with your hands.

Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty! A quick and easy way to ensure complete coverage is to emulsify a toner with your hands. Liz uses a zig-zag application to distribute product throughout the root first and uses her fingers to blend it down. Press play to see this process in action!

3. Layer up.

Sometimes a client wants just a hint of a shadow and that can be hard to achieve while still creating depth and toning out warmth. No worries! Josie recommends toning out your base first and then layering your shadow root right on top for a soft, blended finish. Press play below to see how she applies this technique.

4. Comb it out.

Combing a shadow root through blonde ends can be scary but when done carefully, leaves your client with a drool-worthy root blend and seamless grow out. The trick? Apply the toner to the ends of the hair first to act as a barrier. Press play below to watch Josie’s application process for this blending trick.
