A major lightening transformation can be rewarding work (and totally Instagram-worthy!), but it’s also super easy to cause damage when lifting several levels in one appointment. That’s why it’s essential to use every safe blonding technique to maintain the integrity of your client’s hair during the process. So, Wella Professionals artist Aubrey Loots (@lootypics) went live on BTC’s Facebook to break down a healthy blonding how-to with four levels of lift—check it out below!

But first, we snagged Aubrey’s best tips and where to find them!

  • Formula A (mids to ends)

    30g Wella Professionals BLONDOR Multi-Blonde Powder Lightener + 45g Koleston Perfect 20-volume developer + 6g Wellaplex N°1

  • Formula B (roots)

    30g BLONDOR Multi-Blonde Powder Lightener + 60g Koleston Perfect 20-volume developer + 6g Wellaplex N°1

  • Formula C (session #2 lightening)

    30g BLONDOR Multi-Blonde Powder Lightener + 60g Koleston Perfect 30-volume developer + 6g Wellaplex N°1

2. Here’s Where You Should Start Lifting

When lifting a brunette to blonde, always apply lightener from the midlengths to ends before the roots. Why? The roots will lift more quickly with the heat from the scalp. Pro Tip: Aubrey recommends using cotton to keep lightener off the root and to ensure precise application. (32:35)

3. Don’t Make This Toning Mistake

Avoid pre-mixing toners before the lifting process is over—this can impact pigmentation! Aubrey suggests waiting until the lightener is completely rinsed off, then picking a toner based on the post-lightening color and desired end result. (10:10)

4. Protect & Lift At The Same Time

Aubrey’s lifting mantra is “low and slow” for safe lifting during a major color transformation, and he always adds Wella Professionals Wellaplex N°1 to his lightening formulas to protect as he lifts—no need to raise the developer! Check out more about the Wellaplex three-step system here. (8:05)

5. Balance pH Levels Before Toning

Equalize porosity after lightening to balance pH levels for even toning and pigmentation. Aubrey recommends using Wella Professionals Service Post Color Treatment because it also conditions the hair. (40:30)
