Here’s What You Missed at ISSE 2016

close formula

This won’t mean much to non-Californians, but the big news of the 2016 International Salon and Spa Expo in Long Beach, Calif. was the rain. A full day of thunderous down-pouring. To the drought-weary folks of L.A, that was HUGE. But for everyone else, there was also plenty of noteworthy education and new products. Center and NAHA Stage artists included L’Anza’s Leah Freeman, Naeemah LaFond for Amika, Martin Parsons, Ted Gibson, CoCre8, Tracey Hughes, Crystofer Benson, Jake Thompson and Sassoon. Exhibitors shared demos and hands-on sessions on barbering, long hair styling, color and extensions. And ISSE organizers from the Professional Beauty Association announced Season Two of Beauty Pitch—bigger and better than before!

Attention, beauty entrepreneurs! Cuban’s coming back!

Beauty Pitch 2016
Last year, “Shark Tank’s” Mark Cuban and Paul Mitchell’s John Paul DeJoria made one beauty entrepreneur’s dream come true, selecting a company called 100% Pure to advise and mentor in the inaugural Beauty Pitch, designed to foster the entrepreneurial spirit in our industry. Well, get ready because it looks like 2016 is going to be bigger and better. This year, the “Shark Tank”-like competition will look for beauty entrepreneurs in two categories—Startup and Established—to win grand prizes of $10,000 or $5,000; mentorship from Mark; a cash infusion from a private equity group; distribution leads and more. Entries will be accepted through April 29. Visit
www.beautypitch.com for more details.

L’Anza showed what Vibes can do.

We loved getting a look at Vibes, L’anza’s new collection of high-impact cream colors. Color Director Leah Freeman and members of Team L’Anza were on hand, creating amazeballs shades and demonstrating the versatility of the new range

Before and after with Uberliss Bond System.

We sat in on a class with Uberliss’s Dr. Ali Sayed—the company’s leader and chemist—who shared the science behind the company’s new Uberliss Bond System. According to his tests, he said, in scanning electron microscope tests on double-bleached hair, the Uberliss Bond System led its closest competitor in fiber elasticity strength. What does that mean in English?   The demo model above went from the shade on the left to the shade on the right in one day with minimal damage, and her hair felt amazing! www.uberliss.com.

HairArt mannequin artistry by Toni Rose

Everyone came to HairArt to see extensions and the cool tools like the Razarte, but once they got there, the buzz was all about the Hair Art Mannequin Contest. No wonder—the contest winner will get $1,500, and their manni will be displayed in the next HairArt ad. Good news—there’s still time to enter! www.hairartproducts.com.

The She-Fade.

Ladies like sharp haircuts, too, and at Wahl, the She-Fade—a feminine approach to cropped hair—was a hit. We also got a sneak peek at the new Men’s Method Clipper Cutting program for schools, and ultimately for advanced training. Buzz, buzz!

“B3 is a game-changer,” Martino told the crowd, “and nobody is paying me to say this!”

b3 Brazilian Bond Builder
It was all about Brazilian Bond Build3r/b3, a one-step system that can be mixed into any color formula to prevent breakage.  Social media stars Jenny Strebe (@theconfessionsofahairstylist)Rickey Zito (@hairgod_zito) and Linh Phan (@bescene) were on hand with demos to show their support. And this guy—Martino Cartier—made an unscheduled appearance on the Brazilian stage, telling the audience, “This is a game-changer! You have to use it.”  Then he even gave one audience member $20 to buy a show deal! www.brazilianbondbuilder.com.

You spray, it stays. And stays. And stays.

Just in time for spring weddings with volatile weather, Pravana introduces Super Shape EXTREME hairspray. Our friends are promising 168-hour, HURRICANE-proof hold that’s weightless and not crunchy. Sort of the perfect hairspray storm.

Tom Porter and Sonya Dove.

Malibu Wellness
Well look who we ran into at Malibu’s booth! That’s Malibu Founder Tom Porter and his number one fan, BTC cover girl Sonya Dove! Tom and Sonya had plenty to talk about, including Malibu’s new look. The new packaging is sexy yet classy with color-coded indications for each regimen, all in a unique shade of “Mali-blue!”

Natural rebonding with COLORPHLEX.

There was more repair happening at COLORPHLEX, with what the company is touting as a natural alternative to rebonders. Specifically, they say their system uses a naturally-derived vegetable protein molecule that penetrates the hair, reinforcing bonds during color and bleach processes. They also say there’s no need to increase the level of developer and/or change processing times or formulas. Intriguing!

Olivia Garden’s swanky new booth was the perfect place to shop for the new Eco-Ceramic brushes.

Olivia Garden
Lots of dazzling shopping options at Olivia Garden this year, including the new Cara VG-10 Shear Collection featuring Japanese craftsmanship and ultra-high levels of cobalt and carbon.  Stylists also flocked to the new Eco-Ceramic Brushes with handcrafted wood handles.  The fashion world has taken note—this year, Olivia Garden’s Ann Renette tells us O.G. artists will be doing shows for Vivienne Tam, Alice + Olivia and Denis Baso at New York Fashion Week!

Buh-Bye damage. UNITE 7SECONDS Masque is here.

For 7SECONDS fans who need a little extra conditioning love, UNITE launched 7SECONDS  Masque. Formulated to restore elasticity and infuse hair with intense moisture, the new entry in the collection gives damaged hair a new lease on life.

Multiple barrel options from Enzo Milano.

Enzo Milano
Here’s an intriguing idea—a customizable curling iron system from Enzo Milano. Stylists can compose their own styling kits with a wide range of detachable barrels! And for the double-fisted artist? Handles are now also sold separately. www.enzomilano.com
