Scientists claim that natural redheads are heading toward extinction. So in the spirit of renewal and preservation, Tinseltown is doing its part to keep the sizzling hue alive, evidenced by the fact that more and more celebs are going red. Aura Friedman, Wella’s North American Color Creative Director, dishes on the fiery trend that’s heating up Hollywood.

“It’s a strong color for women with strong personalities,” says Aura. As with any hair color, suitability is critical, Aura warns, so make sure your client is comfortable with and can pull off a strong red before you reach for the brush or bottle. “Warm reds are not appropriate for olive skin tones, but they’re amazing on pink, yellow or neutral undertones,” she explains. “And on very fair skin, medium-toned shades are best.”

Because so many high profile celebs are rocking red color, clients will want to try the tone, too! Here’s Aura’s formula recommendation for sultry celeb Florench Welch’s hot hue:

Florence’s Color Formula
On the roots: Wella Koleston Perfect 1 tube 6/74 + ½ tube 6/43 + 20-volume developer.
On the ends: Koleston Perfect equal parts 7/34 + 8/43 with double 20-volume developer.

Pro tips:
—Doubling the developer produces more vibrant, longer-lasting red color because it drives the tone further into the cortex.
—Revive this red with Color Touch Relights.
