Extreme Makeover: Lob Edition

close formula

If you’re not yet convinced of the power of social media to help grow your salon business, Edwin Ramirez’s story is going to change your mind.

It was just an average day at the salon for Edwin, a stylist at Kut Haus Salon in Claremont, Calif., when a new client sat in his chair and requested balayage and a trim. OK…nothing unusal about that. So Edwin got to work—creating a custom color formula for his client. Edwin took photos of his work, asked his client’s permission to post and shared his balayage brilliance on Instagram.

Natural Level: 5

Wella Professionals Color Formulas
Formula A (lightener): Wella BLONDOR + 20-volume in the back and 30-volume toward the front

Formula B (toner): Wella Color Touch 7/1 + 7/71 + 7/3

Application
1. Using Formula A, pre-lighten to a Level 7/8 using a balayage technique and weaving in lighter and darker pieces.

2. Tone using Formula B.

Total time: About 5 hours

Pricing: Balayage: $170; Cut: $70

Just a week later, Edwin got a call from the same client. She had followed Edwin on Instagram and was impressed and inspired by all of his long bob makeovers. She wanted one, too, and she immediately booked a second appointment with Edwin!

“Even though we were cutting off a lot of the previous work I had done,” says Edwin, “I encouraged her to cut her hair because it was long, thick and it was hard for her to style—shoot, it was hard for me to style!”

Edwin recommended one of his signature, long bobs—a perfect compromise to remove some of her weight and still retain the beautiful balayage he had done the week before. She happily agreed, and is clearly loving her new look!

Total time (second cut): 1.5 hours; $70
