Techniques: Braids, Curl Sets & Crimper Tools → Disco Texture
We spotted disco texture—crimped waves falling off a strong center part and expanding into a dramatic triangular silhouette—everywhere this season at New York Fashion Week. BTC was backstage to see (and share) what really goes into prepping these high-volume, dance floor curls from lead stylists. Think braids, curl sets and a crimper revival!

Scroll to see everything from the cool-girl version of wearable waves to the avant-garde, then get the products and techniques you need to catch disco fever.

Show Notes: Prep with Moroccanoil® Treatment Light and either Thickening Lotion or Smoothing Lotion (depending on density) before blow-drying. After the blowout, apply Perfect Defense and curl the hair using a 1.25-inch iron—pinch. twist and pin into a curl set—apply Luminous Hairspray Strong and brush it out for ‘disco, gangster with a dash of Jerry Hall.’

Show Notes: Give your crimper the revival it deserves, working in 2-inch sections from roots to ends and securing with Redken Triple Take 32. Then, use a paddle brush to gently comb through for micro-texture and a matte finish using Triple Dry 15.

3. Cinq á Sept – Kien Hoang (@kienhoang) for Oribe

Show Notes: Section the hair off the parting (Gary used nine total sections), then apply Aveda Phomollient and Texture Tonic. Braid each section, blow-dry using Dyson’s Supersonic™ Hair Dryer Pro Edition and flat-iron to set the texture. Later, release and brush through for fluffy waves.

5. Christian Cowan – Laurent Philippon (@laurentphilippon) for Bumble and bumble.

Show Notes: More braids! Working in sections, prep the hair with Does It All by Bumble and bumble., loop each section into a figure 8 around large hair pins and apply heat with a flat iron for ten seconds. After letting it set, release every section and run through the hair with a fine-tooth comb for ‘disco fever.’

6. Michael Kors – Orlando Pita (@orlandopita)

Show Notes: Starting a couple of inches off of a dramatic center part, this high-volume texture worthy of a dance floor creates a bed of waves that support the groovy Michael Kors hair accessories—headbands, knitwear, hats and veils.

7. Kate Spade New York – Odile Gilbert (@odilegilbert_official)

Show Notes: Before you can achieve brushed-out glam, start by curling the entire head with a small barrel and sections. Allow the curls to set, apply hairspray and backbrush. Flip the hair, raking your fingers and lifting the hair at the root for natural airiness.

8. Collina Strada – Gareth Bromell (@garethbromell) for evo

Show Notes: The ’70s were about more than just disco and this piecey texture paired with gritty separation directed away from the face embodies a glam rock feel—think the runaways meet the runway.

Prep the hair with evo happy campers and comb through, then apply macgyver and blow-dry to set. Take a horeshoe section from recession to recession and clip away. Blow-dry and apply more macqyver from mids to ends. Then, release the top and wrap around a spike 14mm barrel drying the hair with tension. Blow-dry the bangs away from the face and mist with miss malleable to finish.
