Hair Myths vs. Truths: What Your Colorist Wants You To Know

The next time your client says they prefer their drugstore haircare routine—silent tears in the break room!—after you’ve spent hours perfecting their color, hand them this. We’re breaking down five haircare truths every colorist wants their guests to know: the most important products to invest in, why masks do NOT replace conditioner and the final haircare step most clients skip.

1. Myth: Going Dark Will Make Your Hair Healthy

Remember, covering bleached hair with a darker color will not make the hair healthy. When your client says: “My hair just looked so dull, I wanted to make it healthier,” and requests to reintroduce depth—they will still need to invest in haircare products to avoid fast fading or dry, brittle hair that lacks moisture.

Cleveland-based colorist Sally Lemmo (@clevelandhairboss) puts it best: “When we want to take lighter hair darker, it’s important that we make efforts in the salon (and as take-home maintenance) to [ensure] the integrity of the hair is intact,” she explains.

So, color clients: Listen up! We are breaking down four haircare truths below, straight from our trusted stylists.

2. Think Of Haircare Like Skincare

We all know the order skincare goes in: First, you cleanse; then, you might use a mask. Lastly, you’d rinse and apply a moisturizer. Haircare follows the same path: Your shampoo acts as a cleanser, then you can use a hair mask, followed by a conditioner to moisturize.

What is the No.1 most important product to invest in according to professionals? “Shampoo is number one!” Sally says. “If you don’t know where to start with your at-home regimen, start upgrading your shampoo and conditioner first. Shampoos have ingredients in them to create suds [that] can deplete and strip the hair of the essential lipids/strength necessary to stay intact. Not to mention [they] cause color to fade very quickly!” she adds.

Sally’s favorite? “The Schwarzkopf Professional® FIBRE CLINIX™ Fortify Line is an amazing tool both in the salon and at-home to keep the hair strong, reduce breakage up to 90 percent and help protect from thermal damage,” she says.

3. A Mask Will Not Replace Conditioner!

PSA: “Masques are not designed to replace conditioners contrary to what we’ve been taught,” Sally explains. “Rinsing, and then sealing the hair down with conditioner will give you optimal results and increase longevity,” she adds.

Why should clients try the FIBRE CLINIX™ Fortify Mask instead of a color-protecting line? “If we’re not doing anything to maintain or improve the integrity of the hair, that color is not going to last,” Sally explains. You must strengthen the hair first!

4. Fine-Haired Clients That Refuse To Condition? Try This.

Our fine-haired clients’ biggest fear is definitely flat hair, and using the wrong conditioner could be the culprit. Sally’s favorite fix is Schwarzkopf Professional FIBRE CLINIX™ Multi-Repair Lotion for these reasons:

  1. It can be used as a treatment by applying to wet hair, processing for five minutes and rinsing
  2. It can also function as a leave-in when applied to towel-dried hair
  3. Lastly, it can prep dry hair for styling by adding extra protection and shine

5. Don’t Skip The Final Step In Your Routine…

Lastly, a leave-in is a must—here’s why: “The first thing the hair is exposed to is either going to strengthen or weaken it,” Sally explains. “Water should never be the last chemical left on your hair, especially if the hair is damaged, over processed or in a fragile state.”

The “Why”: “When hair is wet, it’s the most vulnerable. When we allow it to air-dry with only water in it, we are allowing the inner core to be exposed and prone to further weakness or damage, causing even more breakage,” Sally adds.

It’s important to use a product that will leave the hair strengthened after chemical services. That’s why Sally reaches for FIBRE CLINIX™ Fortify Sealed Ends Leave-In. “It makes the hair feel amazing and literally seals down split ends,” Sally says. ”And I am obsessed with the fact that it contains niacinamide, because not only does it help to keep the hair youthful and strong, it provides heat protection.”
