Cutting for the Modern Man

close formula

Recently, Sport Clips took over San Antonio for their 2016 National Huddle Conference and IT. WAS. MASSIVE. Bringing more than 2,500 stylists together and celebrating the company’s hugely successful year, the weekend also featured amazing education (business included!), an emotional and inspiring “Shave the Day” event and, of course, “The Look” Competition!

This year, the competition was fierce—among Sport Clips’ 14,000 stylists across the country, only the top six professionals were chosen to compete on stage at The Huddle, recreating their version of the modern man. Like we said—fierce! And the judges thought so, too.

“This was one of the toughest competitions we’ve had,” said Tommy Callahan of John Paul Mitchell Systems, who was on the judging panel. “The looks were all very good, very tight and only a very small number separated first place from third place.” Other judges included show host and platform artist Julian Perlingiero of John Paul Mitchell Systems (JPMS), Anthony Crosfield of Nioxin, Rafe Hardy of Sexy Hair and Marcy Martin of American Crew.

So what’s your ideal haircut for today’s modern man? Is his hair long and relaxed to match his chill personality, or is he more of a go-getter in need of a shorter, more direct cut and style? Whatever your preference, these ladies brought their A-game when cutting and styling on the Huddle stage. They all received 20 minutes to transform their model and were judged on their technique, product use, finished look and interview with the judges. So check ’em out—the stylists, the finished looks and everything in between!

“The Look” Winner Sarah Cottrell

For Sarah’s winning cut, she mixed a classic look with a modern “soccer-boy” style, and the judges were all about it. So let’s break it down—she looked to past generations like the ’30s and ’40s to capture that older, cleaner and more mature cut. Then to modernize the look, she added a hard part inspired by modern-day soccer players. Good call, girl! We love us some soccer boys and their fresh-off-the-field style! And for her big win, Sarah received $2,500, styling tools, hair products and a trip to Paul Mitchell The Gathering!

“The Look” Runner-Up Karlee Halliday

For Karlee’s modern man, she went for a comb-over style with a medium-high fade and won the judges over in the process. Her look was chic and completely on-trend—she told us one of her celebrity inspirations for the style was David Beckham, which of course impressed the crowd and the judges. Her take-home prizes included $1,500, styling tools and hair products!

“The Look” second runner-up Barbara Jean Schofield

For Barbara Jean and her modern man, she wanted to create a style that was up-to-date and totally realistic, not something that could be deemed “too-cool.” Think Bradley Cooper with a super casual twist! To complete his style, Barbara lightly tapered her model’s hair to fade into his beard, keeping the look classic, attainable and definitely modern. For her third-place win, Barbara walked home with $1,000, styling tools and hair products!

Honorable Mentions

Sport Clips stylists Gladys Castillo, Sonja Horton and Sherry Leisle all took home honorable mentions for their modern-man style, along with $500, new styling tools and hair products!
