Has there ever, in all of hair history, been a better time to be a colorist? So many amazing shades at your disposal. So many special effects, so many techniques. And best of all—how about those clients? Never before have the customers sitting in your chair been so enthusiastic about creative colors like daffodil and cotton candy and Kelly green. From eight to 80, they’re open to everything, eagerly swiping through their personal haircolor inspiration collections, pointing to this amethyst shade and that peach and blue color melt, imploring you, “Can we do that on my hair?”

Credit social media for this explosion of color creativity, and because of that, keep a close eye on your feeds. Social media is where trends take hold, which means you have to pay attention. Because when the swiping stops on the latest “It” color technique, you’ll be asked to deliver. Here, we’ve gathered the hottest trends with huge “likes” to bring you up to speed!

Lemon Drop
By Jaymz Marsters (@jaymz.marsters)

Color Formulas
Formula A: Wella Professionals Color Touch 10/6 + Color Touch 9/16 + 1.9% developer

Formula B: 80g Manic Panic Sunshine + 20g Electric Banana + 3.5ml Olaplex No.1

Formula C: 80g Manic Panic Virgin Snow + 2g Manic Panic Lie Locks + 3.75ml Olaplex No.1

How-To
1.
On Level 10 hair, apply Formula A from the bottom of the ear through the ends. Avoid the root and midshafts. Once processed, rinse the hair in cool water, remove product residue with Affinage Deep Cleanse Shampoo, then blow-dry into desired style.

2. Work Formula B into the root area, blending down 5 to 6 inches using a roller comb. Have an assistant hold the hair to prevent the root shade formula from bleeding.

3. Starting at the nape, apply Formula C to the midlengths and ends, blending into the already-processed root area. Process without heat for 60 minutes, then rinse in cold water until all product is removed. Hold the ends out of the backwash while the root area is rinsed.

4. Do not shampoo. Condition and apply Moringaplex Pre-Treatment Spray on damp hair, blow-dry and style.

“The neon category keeps getting more interesting. In the future, we’re going to see artists incorporating metallics into fashion shades to create color stories that are completely different,” says Guy. “There’s no exact mixing ratio when working with these shades—I recommend playing until you find something you like. I do prefer deeper colors closer to the ‘rootage’—I don’t like a bright scalp.”
