4 Edgy Hairstyles From The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund 2019

We can never get ENOUGH of edgy editorial hair and it was front and center at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund 2019 (CVFF). The evening features the future of American fashion as 10 finalists compete for the grand prize of $400,000, two $150,000 runner-up prizes and a coveted mentorship with one of the industry’s best. Creative Director Bob Recine and Paul Mitchell Editorial Director Noogie Thai were responsible for conceptualizing and bringing the contestants runway-ready looks to life and they did not hold back.

The CVFF was started in 2003 to help American designers succeed in the business of fashion. With a specific focus on marketing, public relations, production and sales and personalized mentorship for the winners, the program has helped launch some of fashion’s biggest modern names like 3.1 Philip Lim, Rodarte, Prabal Gurung, Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler and Pyer Moss. This years grand prize winner was Christopher John Rogers, followed by runner-ups Danielle Hirsch of Danielle Frankel and Reese Cooper

With styles that spanned the decades from the roaring ’20s to the big hair of the ’80s, each look perfectly accentuated each of the up and coming designers collections and were able to withstand the models/dancers performative pieces. Noogie broke down some of the styling that went into a couple of the evenings most iconic looks. Keep scrolling for the steps!

Products Used

1. Neon Waves For Christopher John Rogers

25-year old designer Christopher John Rogers is known for his flamboyant designs and bold colors, so of course the most extravagant hair of the evening graced his models. Colorful neon wigs styled into sleek finger waves paired with checkered prints and fun hues, it’s no wonder he took home the grand prize.

How-To:

1. Start by shaping a long, colorful curly wig into a long bob.

2. Apply Paul Mitchell Extra-Body Sculpting Foam to the hair.

3. Follow it up by applying Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Firm Hold Gel in segmented layers from the base to the mid-shaft of the hair for volume.

4. Once the bottom is finished, repeat the last two steps on the top of the hair. Smooth the product down, while leaving curls intact at the ends.

5. Mold the front sections of the hair into an ‘s’ along the face.

6. Apply Paul Mitchell Extra-Body Firm Finishing Spray and set the look using Paul Mitchell NEURO Dry hairdryer.

Pro Tip: “Dry [the hair] with a diffuser on low and slow,” says Noogie on setting the waves. “Do not brush.”

2. ’50s Pompadour For Reese Cooper

Reese Cooper is a virtual unknown, but the 21-year old debuted his first collection at 18 and has gained a cult following ever since. His signature streetwear meets high fashion take pairs perfectly with the rockabilly pompadours of the ’50s.

How-To:

1. Apply Extra-Body Sculpting Foam to the hair for a strong hold.

2. Tease the strands going up with the Paul Mitchell Teasing Brush and the NEURO Dry to achieve maximum volume.

3. Separate hair into two sections and pull back layers to create a beehive. Pin in place and tuck in sections toward the back of the head.

4. Spray Extra-Body Finishing Spray and Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine Super Spray for hold.

Note: Noogie used the Extra-Body Sculpting Foam and Finishing Spray in almost every look. He explained that, “These are two work horse products that not only give great shine and flexibility, but they can be used on any texture, style or shape. The hair was still moveable, but could withstand the dancing and movement the models had to make.”

3. Full Volume For Tre by Natalie Ratabesi

LA-based Natalie Ratabesi is an industry veteran who’s tenure for brands like Christian Dior and Ralph Lauren has shaped how the designer approaches her high-low luxury brand Tre by Natalie Ratabesi. To emphasize the strong shoulders and bright colors of the ’80s, her models shined with big, voluminous perm-inspired curls from the decade.

How-To:

1. Drench the hair in Extra-Body Sculpting Foam and blowdry straight to create volume.

2. Once dry, use Paul Mitchell Express Gold Curl 1″ Curling Iron to curl the entire head in one direction.

3. Comb through the hair and pin back one side.

4. Apply Extra-Body Finishing Spray to set the waves.

4. Wispy Bun For Danielle Frankel

If bridal designer Danielle Hirsch’s models from her brand Danielle Frankel looked as if they’d literally just sprinted from the alter, that was the intention. Bob told Vogue.com that his inspiration for the messy bridal buns he created was of a bride getting cold feet. “It’s a bun for the runaway bride. They’re going to be running in a veil!”

How-To:

1. Brush hair into a high ponytail using the Paul Mitchell 413 Sculpting Brush.

2. Pull out baby hairs and flyaways for a messy look.

3. Secure the ponytail with a hair tie. Add extensions around the base for length, wrap half of it around the real hair and pin into place.

4. Apply Extra-Body Firm Finishing Spray to the bun.

5. Tease the leftover extensions with the Teasing Brush around the bun.

6. Spray Paul Mitchell Hold Me Tight to keep the hair in place.
