BTC Brings Hairdressing Stars Together for #ONESHOT Hair Awards

Fifteen years ago when behindthechair.com was first formed, our mission was clear: serve and protect hairdressers and provide every opportunity we could to celebrate each and every one of them. When BTC set out to create our #ONESHOT Hair Awards, we wanted it to be different than any other awards program out there.

Fifteen years ago when Mary Rector-Gable first started behindthechair.com, her mission was clear: serve and protect hairdressers and provide every opportunity she could to celebrate each and every one of them—regardless of whether they were a famous celebrity stylist or a hairdresser working behind the chair.

When BTC set out to create our #ONESHOT Hair Awards, we wanted it to be different than any other awards program. We wanted to create a fully transparent format where every hairdresser could enter their work, every hairdresser could see the work that was entered, and only hairdressers would be given an opportunity to vote. So, we decided to leverage the adopted social media gallery of hairdressers—Instagram—as our platform.

On April 26, we uploaded our first Instagram post leading to our #ONESHOT site. In 24 hours, we had more than 10,000 submissions. In six weeks, we had more than 47,000 entries from more than 20 countries across the world.

When the doors opened to the first-ever #ONESHOT Hair Awards on the night of September 27 at The Hyatt Regency in New Orleans (where BTC was hosting our COLOR, Cut & Style Show), hairdressers who stand behind the chair were celebrated for their work for the very first time in history. Twenty-six awards were given away; 14 Big Shot Awards—given to celebrity stylists, session artists, platform artists and iconic educators; and 12 Hot Shot Awards—given to hairdressers doing real hair behind the chair.
Their work was also all featured on the cover of the latest behindthechair.com On Paper Magazine. At the end of the night, Mary also gave away two very special awards—to the Big Shot of the Year and Hot Shot of the Year (find out who they are below!).

A packed house for the first-ever #ONESHOT Hair Awards.

That night, the room was filled with the biggest hairdressing icons in the world—from Kim Vo to Anthony Mascolo to Four-Time Australian Educator of the Year, Tracey Hughes, to Two-Time Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year Nominee, Julian Dalrymple—as well as the biggest social media hairdressing stars in the world—Guy Tang, @confessionsofahairstylist, @cassandraplatinum, @hairgod_zito—all brought together by behindthechair.com. Nine countries were represented: The U.S., Canada, Australia, Indonesia, The United Kingdom, Ireland, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Germany.

BTC’s #ONESHOT awards brought together some of the
biggest hairdressing stars in the industry, from Sonya Dove and Beth Minardi…

…To Robert Cromeans and James Morrison!

“It’s been such a joy after 15 years to watch you guys create this sense of community—because I don’t think we’ve seen it to this extent in a really long time,” Mary said on stage as she opened the show.

It was a night to remember—we laughed, we cried, we made history.

“The whole event was one big, positive adventure,” said International Avant-Garde Big Shot Winner, Petra van den Burg. “The positivity I felt during the show is all what our industry is all about! Learning, sharing and discovering.”

“I am so honored by the opportunity to finally be seen and acknowledged by so many of my own hair heroes,” said Rainbow Shot of the Year and Extensions Shot of the Year Hot Shot Winner, Rickey Zito. “It was basically like a dream.”
